I could... but I got in on that Hero's Deal a little while ago and doubled my data for only $4 extra... my inner deal hunter won't let me give that up 😏

If I didn’t have an old “Friends of 2degrees” 15% association discount on my account, I would just switch back to prepay at this point. There really seems no incentive to be on Pay Monthly as a plan-only customer anymore - since if you ever decide to get a MRO you can just Pre2Post and keep any existing carryover balances.

I know no one makes phone calls any more (call your mother!) but on the new prepay plans you'd only get unlimited* calls to 2degrees mobile numbers while on the pay monthly plans you could make unlimited* calls to all NZ and Aussie numbers.

Other than that (and the MRO) its hard to see any differences now.

Some providers (eg. not 2degrees) either forbid Hotspotting on their unlimited plans, or make you pay extra to use it.

The "Data Hotspotting for no extra charge" is 2degrees' way of saying you can do what you want with your data (including using it to Hotspot), the way it should be.

Ah, thanks for that. I had no idea other telcos forbid hot spotting let alone could enforce it. Can see why they might have done that in the early days when their networks weren't as well provisioned but seems totally ridiculous now. I know two people who Spark have effectively "encouraged" to move their fixed line services to their 4G network so Spark don't have to pay Chorus for the connection each month. Those customers then receive a modem which effectively is a mobile device hot spotting to everyone in the household via the same 4G mobile network.

FWA and mobile data really aren't the same thing - for a start the FWA plans all have caps. Managing capacity on a site is very different to having the capability to use any cellsite.

Preventing hotspotting is easy, and it's been in use since unlimited plans launched in NZ.

@jim69 I know you have zero clue what you are speaking about when it comes to calling usage

Go back and look at the Prepay plans and what they offer. Click on the right hand arrow so you can see all the offers

Actually I just logged in to the 2degrees portal, and can see that my data allowance has been updated from 1.5 to 2.5 GB per month, so it seems that no action is required from me and I have been automatically been put onto the new plan (which for the $30 plan at least is just an increase in the data allowance, compared to the old $30 plan).

My guess if you are paying the same dollar value per month and they have a newer plan with more features, nobody's going to complain they automatically get more for the same price. It also clears up their legacy plans if they can move people off them. If the new plans are more expensive that's a different story.

Just got an email from 2degrees here is another awesome change for Prepay customers!

Keep your gigs and mins for at least 3 months

To give you even more choice and flexibility, we’ve supercharged the shelf-life of your gigs and mins. If your Plan doesn’t renew cause you’re a bit short on funds, you’ll now hang on to your Carryover Minutes and Carryover Data for 3 months. Data and minutes on active Prepay Plans are carried over for 12 months. Seems fair, right? Someone should tell the other guys

Just a shame I couldn’t get reliable 4G with 2degrees.

It would drop to 3G on data clock, and in the Linwood area of Christchurch it would be on 3G most of the time.
People said it wasn’t doing it on their devices and I posted screen shots so no resolution.

2degrees with 1 hour free a day etc better deal then Skinny, but with Skinny when not on a phone call, the 4G has never dropped, data binge and every area 4G rock solid.

Just seems Skinny is a better mobile network, unless things changed in last couple years.

One difference between pay monthly and prepay is the offer on your home connection. Those on pay monthly can get $20 a month off their home connection, I don't think prepay offers that discount. Tempting to switch both services over but I'll have to see if it's cheaper than jumping on a new 6 month half price contract and keeping my prepaid in the long run.

It was doing it with some handsets, though not all. We have made changes within the last month that have allowed us to remove the need for the procedure which caused it to happen in the first place.

Skinny has done nothing to counter the 1 hour a day, and also notice if I find have a build up of data there’s a $10 roll over plan on 2degrees, so guessing can take data from other plan onto it, and go back to higher plan when data getting low.

$16 is Skinny’s lowest roll over.

Also from memory my Tom Tom traffic worked direct with 2degrees, where I have to run mobile data through a VPN for it to work with Skinny.

I'm currently on their $9 prepay plan which is insane value for me given I virtually don't ring anyone or use the data because I have Wifi almost everywhere I am. Mine's rollover as I have heaps of accumulated minutes and GBs.

Received an email from 2degrees the other day which says "We reckon our new $10 Prepay Plan would be the perfect fit for you. For just $1 extra you’ll get a total of 100 carryover minutes PLUS unlimited* calls to 2degrees mobiles. Our $9 Prepay Combo is being discontinued so if you move off this plan or don’t renew within 14 days, you won’t be able to purchase again.". It kind of suggests to me the $9 plan will eventually be dumped however mine will renew in a couple of days. What happens the following month is anyone's guess.
