OzoneNZ:
dt: Big chorus outage in Albany, Auckland fwiw

Really hope this is it, cause I called into 2degrees Care and the rep was totally unwilling to entertain the possibility it wasn't my BYO router causing it - refused to investigate further on their end and blamed my setup that was working until 1pm today with no changes (MikroTik RB3011).

@NickMack any chance you could confirm the Chorus outage in Albany would cause the PPPoE issues?

The 2d rep said he wasn't aware of any outages in the area

For reference I am in Pinehill/Albany area

Orcon support was quite helpful, support desk answered my call in roughly 2 mins and they confirmed my address was effected by the current Chorus outage, will apparently be sent an automated text once it’s resolved.

unless somethings changed in the last 40 mins the Chorus outage page is showing no more outage in Albany for me?

My internet (with Orcon) came back up around around 5pm~

Maybe the service providers needed to do something after Chorus fixed what ever they were working on?

Turns out the Chorus outage was just coincidental for me - the fault has been rectified by a legendary technician at 2degrees (Reece?) at around 10am.

What really disappointed me was that 2 different reps would not take my word that I had troubleshooted with different cables, different routers, and confirmed my configuration was correct etc. I could literally see the BNG just not responding once PPPoE auth had finished using debug logging on my MikroTik.

The 2nd rep only escalated the issue to a supervisor once I threatened to just cancel my Gig service and order from somewhere else, because provisioning a new service would take less time than to send out a Chorus tech in 24-48 hours (who would have found nothing since it was a 2d issue, then back in circles we go).

Turns out my static IP address had been double-booked and assigned to another customer as well, as soon as I was issued a new address the PPPoE session came right up.

100% understand that there's people calling in with BYO routers and issues they cause themselves all the time wasting 2d's time, but the front-line support staff seem to think the CPE is always to blame as soon as BYO is mentioned?

Anyway, Gig service is back up and running so I'm a happy man! Shout out to Reece again who sat with me and worked through the PPPoE logs with another tech to figure it out.
