My original query was related to the covid alerts that I didn't receive.

Once I saw people having issues today in the tsunami thread I wondered if it was a wider problem with 2D.

robjg63:

The first alerts only went to areas that were directly in danger and told people to evacuate.

I am in central Auckland and we got an alert at around 11.30am to keep away from the water.

There was an 'all clear' (apart from Barrier Island) at 3:12pm.

They targeted the areas where the messages went.

Where is the OP located?

I have a phone on 2Degrees in North Auckland and can confirm that I received the alerts just the same as my Vodafone and Spark phones did today, no missing messages.

Hi there

We have had successful deliveries on the alerts this morning on the 2degrees network. Occasionally, some phones might not receive them. In the case of not receiving these, it could be for one of the below reasons:

- software out of date
- phone ineligible (see list here: https://getready.govt.nz/prepared/stay-informed/emergency-mobile-alert/capable-phones/
- not connected to a cellsite the alert was sent via
- alert settings not set up correctly

...

I have a tablet with a 2D SIM card in it. No COVID or tsunami alerts received. Does anyone know why such tablets are not listed on the getready.govt.nz site listed above?

Tablets are not compatible with the alert system.

I can find references to ipads and Samsung Tab S tablets being able to receive alerts in the US. What is different in the NZ case?

I didn't get any of the recent sets of COVID alerts on my mobile - I think probably because I'm connected to WiFi calling and not to a cell site (we have marginal reception indoors here)?

I'm sure my handset was connected to WiFi calling when I got some of the alerts

@SaltyNZ should be able to confirm?

SaltyNZ: Tablets are not compatible with the alert system.

Yah, that is kinda obvious from my post & the list of compatible phones.

Like Bung, I'd like to know why mobile enabled tablets are not compatible?

I'll check that; I have a suspicion cell broadcast doesn't work on VoWifi since there is no actual cell to broadcast on.

I guess you'd have to ask the device manufacturers. We (2degrees) don't make the lists. I assume the expectation is that if you have a tablet with you then you surely have a phone with you so there's little point in doing all the compatibility work for tablets as well.

For what it's worth, the only mention of iPads in terms of emergency alerting that I can find for North America (i.e. including Canada as well as the US) is a DHS strategy document from 2013. Neither Apple nor any of the carrier pages I looked at mention anything other than iPhone, nor do they mention any Samsung tablets. Where is this reference you mention?

At this stage I'm thinking this is a mistake in t-mobiles support pages.

Yeah I don't think that is actually meant to mean that tablets can receive the alerts. It's just a generic page about alert tones on iOS or Android that happens to mention emergency alerts. Their page on emergency alerts does not list any tablets. In fact, their page on emergency alerts has the same list as every other US carrier which you will also find closely matches the NZ list.

As an aside I did double check that there was no cell broadcast support on VoWifi access (not completely implausible since it emulates some aspects of the normal access network) and the consensus is no, not that bit of it.
