Certainly averse to diagnosing the problem. Good luck selling the extra modems on trademe.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

No. My one attempt to inspect the modem's internals ended when I couldn't get in via 192.168.1.1 a second time.

This was via wifi, of course. Sure, I could connect by cable, but I don't see the point of this, because he won't be using cable for future use.

keep it simple....

The point of using a LAN cable directly to your neighbors modem is to establish a reliable connection to your neighbors modem web interface to examine the WAN status.... an important first step....

If the WAN status can't be verified or is not connecting or is not stable then the config needs checking and/or the WAN cabling needs checking.

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

As it is a new connection then presumably the WiFi will not be setup. You need to connect via ethernet cable and do the setup.

Gordy7 and Clima: Thanks guys. Good advice and simply put. I'll do it tomorrow and come back with the results.

@geekIT there wouldn't be any chance of interference between other radio-emitting devices in your neighbours house?

Highly unlikely. While that might limit the maximum speed, it's not likely to cause those kinds of issues.

My money would be on the laptop being set up for a static IP in the wrong range, or the wrong IP being used for the router's web interface.

OK, problem semi-solved. I connected the modem to the laptop by cable and got into the settings via 192.168.1.1. So ethernet is working and the owner is happy. No wireless yet, the modem's internal wireless menus don't match Slingshot's instructions, so I'll have to talk to their techs.

Odd thing with the included 1m RJ45 network cables - the blue one didn't work but the yellow did. I'm no network cable expert but I've done a small amount of cabling for customers, and I thought that all cables are wired the same, except for the purple crossover ones.

Anyway, it's almost all good. At least I can patch into his computer with Teamviewer, now.

Thanks to all who've commented πŸ‘

sbiddle:

Obviously you need to start with basics.
Are Slingshot even doing copper voice lines? I thought all new connections would have been VoIP

Slingshot do BasebandIP for copper based voice

The WiFi details will match what is on the bottom of the router. One of the only reason they'd be different is if you've flashed the Netcomm firmware onto a Slingshot router. You haven't done that have you?

If it isn’t the Slingshot FW, just look up online an instruction manual for the generic model.

sbiddle: "The WiFi details will match what is on the bottom of the router". Well, sorta. The default user is 'admin' and the password is the last six digits of the MAC address, but in lower case.

That part was easy. As was setting up a new name for his SSID, in case he ever wanted to pick out his station from the surrounding six or seven. The difficulty arose when it came to entering a new password for his SSID. The diagram that came with the modem says, "In the field labelled 'WPA\WAPI passphrase' enter a new Wi-Fi password and click 'Save'. Problem is there's no 'field labelled 'WPA\WAPI passphrase'. And no, I don't recall what the available fields were - I'm not at his house ATM.

I also have the PDF guide for that model modem, but it's no more informative. Maybe I can find more fulsome details online. I'm reluctant to spend another hour waiting for Slingshot's helpdesk to respond.

Sorted. It was a line issue.
