Also if you're going by complaints just ask yourself - when have you submitted anything to Trustpilot on good service? Have you looked at the other providers also (eg - your old one? https://nz.trustpilot.com/review/orcon.net.nz). You'll note every provider has bad ratings on Facebook / Trustpilot. Everyone has different experiences but generally my experience with Orcon is terrible while my experience (with a few niggles) has been generally positive with 2degrees.

ISP's generally have bad ratings on Trustpilot because people would rather rate them badly even though an issue is potentially caused by something on their end and not even related to the ISP in question.

Lastly, Facebook is terrible here as people only really complain on providers pages. It is not indicative on general service at all because there is the other side of it where page owners have control of content including negative comments and often remove these.

If you can pm me your username for the broadband account e.g. Johndoe@snap.net.nz
I can then get your network profile checked out

Hi and just to reiterate, the CSR is a switch that just happens to support RouterOS, however it supports RouterOS with very very limited routing capablitlity as its really designed for L2. As others have said, it CAN NOT route more than a couple of hundred Mb/s at very best.

If you look at the hardware block diagram of any of the CRS1xx series, they are basically an RB2011 with a bigger single switch chip / more switch ports. There's a single 1Gb link from the CPU to the switch chip, so for routing, best case (theoretical) scenario is 500 Mb/s full duplex as routed traffic has to traverse that link twice. In practice, the CPU will be the limiting factor, depending on packet size, firewall rules etc. With fast track should be quite comfortable on a 200 Mb/s connection. With a very minimal config, you'll get a bit more, but better to go for a more capable model.

Hi All,

Thank you for all your responses and advice, it has been very helpful.

  • I called up 2degrees right at the stroke of 8am, and was told to call back once the call centres were open at 8am. So I immediately called back hoping to be the first in the queue. (Options 9 for broadband then option 3 for tech support)
  • After about 1.5 hours on hold I got picked up by their tech support.
  • They said they did not provision the speed profile correctly and said they usually do it 'manually' or after the customers request it.
  • I told them it was strange that I signed up for a particular speed profile but I had to call them for it to be applied. Otherwise it would default to 100Mbits down.
  • I also queried the huge support delays of 1.5 hours hold, and they said there wasn't anything they could do about that, but that they were trying to improve it. The lady on the line sounded very frayed too, a bit stressed and sighed a lot.
  • She then put me on the correct profile, asked me to reset the router and I reran the speed test and now I'm getting the advertised speeds.

I've been tinkering with the Mikrotik and Fritz!Box, and am able to get 15% faster speeds (230Mbps vs 195ish) with the Mikrotik with specialised settings. I think I will stick with the Mikrotik because I get faster speeds and it provides more network setting options / flexibility than the Fritz!Box.

@JohnTiler glad it is all sorted and 2d is advertising for more NZ base staff all the time so they are trying to get more staff for sure

I don't think I have really had to call them in the last 2+ years as the Fibre service is rock solid

The speed profile normally happens automatically but sometimes automation doesn’t occur. Also on top of everything, we’re in a global pandemic and call centres are really affected to the point everyone has to work from home (and likely not all their staff can) - be kind.

I also don’t believe you one single bit with the speed differences as “specialised settings” simply can’t influence the speed your ISP provides. You’ll have the exact same result with your Fritz!Box as this 15% is actually provided by Enable / 2degrees to get around TCP / Network overheads to ensure customers can get the full speed of their plan. There is nothing specialised you need to do in order to achieve this. But anyway, your choice but I’d rather use the Fritz for hardware offloading along with correctly setup IPv6…

Anyway. Glad you’re sorted.

Fritzbox is quite consistently 200Mbits, while the Mikrotik is around 218Mbits. Had to do a bit of tinkering though.

Thanks for your comments and feedback, appreciated.

Fritz!Box

Mikrotik (only a little bit faster 9-10%, but still)

Point 3 from https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=239862 it sounds like. Highly likely 2degrees push the profile out to the router for support reasons. Regardless, you won’t notice this at all + Speedtest is not the source of truth of what your line is running at.

Their call centre response times are appalling. It seems most of the telcos response times seem to go in cycles.

Hi

Sadly this seems to be a common issue, happened to me about 5 times now during every fibre provider change.
Nowadays i expect it to happen

wonder if your issue is the same as mine ... WAS,

I moved from 100 to 900/400 with 2 degrees. was consistently getting approx 50% of the desired speed although very occasionally a higher speed was seen fleetingly.

emails calls etc to both 2D and Enable and both swore blind that they had the correct configuration and profile loaded.

tested with just about every speed test service in the known universe all telling me the same thing.

I inadvertently stopped using Firefox, which was my sole browser for the last 12 years...and bingo !!

full speed ahead. Chrome, Edge, Bravo all run flat out.

reloaded Firefox with no add ons ...reduced speed reported.

I felt a bit of a d**K and if any of those wonderfully patient Customer Service folk from 2D or Enable are reading this forum..... I profoundly apologise .

I wouldn't expect reliable results testing 900/400 connections with any browser. The browser you find to be the most affected may not be consistent either.

For example, I just did three Ookla Speednet tests each from the command line (CLI) tool, Firefox, and Edge. CLI got around 900-930 Mbps down in each test, Firefox 700-750, and Edge around 550-600.
