yitz:

The latency increase is likely due to the Indigo West cable system undergoing maintenance and additional latency incurred on re-routed paths. The Indigo West is one of three cable systems (SMW3 and ASC being the other two) between the west coast of Australia and Singapore and carries much of Internet traffic between Aus/NZ and Asia and Europe.

Example of notice from an Australian ISP: https://advisories.internode.on.net/item/20406/

That's great info. Many thanks.

Out of curiosity, if the Australian ISP's were aware that this "maintenance" would affect their services to clients, wouldnt the NZ ISP's also be aware of this, and if so why dont they advise clients in a similar way?

Do all ISP's have this issue occur from time to time eg Voyager? It does seem to affect 2 degrees quite often, which affects my ability to game effectively.

It all depends on the providers paths out of NZ. 2degrees rely on Vocus for the path to Asia via their peering arrangements. These clearly change often and therefore it creates this issue.

Nick.

The increase in ping times in the original posters traceroute will be due to the reverse path taken, most if not all NZ ISPs will have that same forward path onward from Sydney i.e. the Level3.net hops onwards as the game provider has engaged them to pick up the traffic and most NZ providers have peering with Level3/Lumen. As far as I can tell 2degrees don't use Vocus for transit in Asia the reverse path for 2degrees will be either through GTT or Cogent and unluckily or by design they do not have redundant paths over more than one cable system between Australia and Singapore unlike pretty much all providers other NZ ISPs use so are routing via North America.

Thank you very much all for the investigation and insight into the issues I have been having, not ideal for my gameplay but at least now I am informed about the reasons why. I guess we can call this solved and I'll see what happens when their maintenance ends, and at least I have a temporary solution even if it comes at additional cost.
