I have been struggling with higher ping and a lot of 'rubber-banding'/freezing in Final Fantasy 14 the last week, the game is rather unplayable lately because of it. My knowledge about this stuff is very limited, I read the tutorials posted here so if I'm making mistakes please guide me.

I ran a tracert to the game servers and saw some strange stuff:

Tracing route to 124.150.157.158 (Elemental JP Datacenter) over a maximum of 30 hops

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  fritz.box [192.168.178.1]
  2     2 ms     1 ms     1 ms  186.7.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.7.186]
  3     2 ms     1 ms     1 ms  198.18.10.209
  4     7 ms     1 ms     1 ms  169.10.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.10.169]
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  6    27 ms    26 ms    56 ms  4.56.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.56.4]
  7    29 ms    27 ms    26 ms  5.56.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.56.5]
  8    27 ms    27 ms    27 ms  be108.cor02.syd04.nsw.vocus.network [114.31.192.86]
  9    27 ms    27 ms    27 ms  be100.bdr04.syd03.nsw.vocus.network [114.31.192.45]
 10    30 ms    47 ms    29 ms  as3356.bdr04.syd03.nsw.vocus.network [114.31.201.29]
11   140 ms   144 ms   139 ms  ae-2-3605.edge2.Tokyo4.Level3.net [4.69.217.18] (My friends showed me some results from their tracerts to the same IP, they are on different ISP's and this is the usual ping they get in-game, I do not and usually average 180-190ms)

12   250 ms   218 ms   218 ms  8.244.128.126 (Wierd hop here, I did a search and the IP is registered in Kansas, USA?)
13   217 ms   218 ms   221 ms  163.139.130.222 (Remaining hops are all registered under Square Enix JP)
 14   217 ms   218 ms   218 ms  210.131.255.34
 15   218 ms   219 ms   219 ms  61.195.56.165
 16   219 ms   219 ms   217 ms  219.117.144.78
 17   219 ms   219 ms   217 ms  219.117.144.49
 18   219 ms   219 ms   219 ms  219.117.144.29
 19     *      219 ms     *     219.117.147.186
 20   220 ms   219 ms   219 ms  124.150.157.158

My friend recommended I try a 'gaming routing service' and it made a significant difference, no rubber-banding/freezing and avg ping of 130-140ms. I do not want to have to pay for an additional service just to get the same results as my friends on different ISPs though.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Seems related - basically their upstream provider GTT who they use for Asian routes is currently not handing over traffic in Sydney but North America instead...maybe there is a fault on their submarine or terrestrial cable systems or something else affecting their Australia point of presence. I think 2degrees are the only ones in NZ to use GTT so that's why other NZ ISPs aren't affected as they use NTT, Telstra, Vocus etc.. for Asian connectivity. Not getting your Asian connectivity handed over in Sydney makes it pretty much useless latency wise from an NZ point of view.

Do all ISP's have this issue occur from time to time eg Voyager? It does seem to affect 2 degrees quite often, which affects my ability to game effectively.

Glad to see I am not alone on this issue, at the very least I can use my 'routing service' for now and hope that the issue is resolved at some point. It sucks to have to pay an additional service but at least it is giving me the ping that I should have.

The latency increase is likely due to the Indigo West cable system undergoing maintenance and additional latency incurred on re-routed paths. The Indigo West is one of three cable systems (SMW3 and ASC being the other two) between the west coast of Australia and Singapore and carries much of Internet traffic between Aus/NZ and Asia and Europe.
