Or would they need to call the helpdesk as it may now involve a plan change or addon if they actually cancelled the phone service?

Assuming they do need to call the helpdesk, should it be as easy as asking for "landline phone over the ONT please"?

If the number was ported away from the NEAX you might be SOL getting that same number back as I believe it goes back to the owners pool after 90 Days e.g. Spark

If it was a new number provided by Orcon you should be able to get it back

Yes, voice over your ONT's POTS or TEL port is possible. PM me with your account info and I'll ask the team to swap you over.

I asked Chorus about why not all ISPs offer/support the ONT's phone line.

They say it's offered to every ISP by Commerce Commission.

So why doesn't all ISPs offer the ONT phone line?

Some people have had their home's phone wiring wired directly into the ONT (hard to uplug) so it's not fair on people switching.

Non-tech savvy people would likely pay someone for the cable to be terminated differently to a wall jack beside the ONT. Particularly for those moving house and find an ONT like this.

Is there any legal binding thing that could make all ISPs support it?

You'd think we'd have a universal system.
