Delorean:

Maybe 2D has their mojo back!

More like 2D has given up it's rebellious youthful ways and is slowly and steadily turning into it's parents. I don't remember the last time I saw something from 2D and went "Wow" in a good way.  NZ is currently sitting at 199 out of 230 on the cable.co.uk league table for the cost of 1gb of mobile data. Rather than try to shake up the market, it feels like 2 Degrees has just decided to join the other 2 at the trough.

I think anything that sharpens the pencils is a good thing. That being said, I believe 2D is being somewhat sneaky with their change to Carry over allocations.

I've read the verbiage on the 2D site and whilst I'm fairly certain that it will pass the Fair trading act hurdles, I feel that this implementation of rollover is not on the side of consumer. IMHO, this is to give the illusion of rollover whilst significantly their ability to redeem or 'bank' data.

That being said, Spark employs the exact method... Hopefully this won't be a trend for other Telco's to follow. Skinny's website is unclear but Vodafones clearly states that rollover is used first (for prepaid Flex).
Before anyone raises it - yes, I am aware that both Spark and Vodafone cap their roll over data allowances at 3.5GB whilst Skinny and 2D does not.

Without commenting on the merits of the method, it would be a foolish person who thinks that all of the "corporate evil" of Telecom went to Chorus and not Spark.. Most of it, sure, but not all. I have zero doubt that there are people at Spark who still cherish the good old days of shafting the consumer. "What has every telco in the world done in the past? It's used confusion as its chief marketing tool. And that's fine." as Theresa Gattung put it.

It wasn't fine then, it's even less fine now, yet still they persist in trying.

Yes, using current monthly data before roll over data reduces value greatly. (Depending on usage patterns). I couldn’t determine from Skinny terms how it worked either but do note the data that I have expiring first is below the monthly allowance, so going by that roll over is being used first. If they change it I will view it as a price increase, like when packaging size of a product is reduced but same price.

Like you I hope this is not a new trend.

Couple of other interesting changes. It's like a boring version of the old plans, and the plan limits are much lower unfortunately.

1. If you downgrade to a lower Carryover plan you can only keep 20GB of carryover data. No limit on that in the past from experience.
2. Sharing data requires the recipient to have a carryover plan. So probably can't share it with a $0 credit, no plan pre-paid SIM in my iPad then.

Can I dish out Carryover data to friends and family?
Yes! Share it with the data guzzling kids or mates who need to book a ride home if they have a 2degrees Carryover Plan.

@tardtasticx I would say 2 means you can't share to a unlimited plan

On a similar vane of the carryover data, I really think that the 'data hour' is a gimmick. Sure, power users who invest the effort will get something from it... but for the bulk of folks, I suspect that they'll use it maybe once or twice and then just use regular data.
Its a classic way of being able to 'show value' with minimal cost.

I really think that 2 Degrees has lost their way. As a consumer, I want them to offer simple plans that offer outstanding value. Again, I know what Spark and Vodafone are...

Hopefully 2 Degrees will be able to find a little bit of that spark (no pun intended) that made it an innovative challenger.

Those new plans look great, perfect for my usage. Can't see myself using more than 10GB a month routinely, so the extra banked would be great for business trips where hotel internet is rubbish. I get unlimited data on my work mobile, but used to share the personal data (dual SIM) to my 4G iPad and it was wonderful. Just need eSIM and I'll be free from my enforced sojourn with Spark

The 6 month free Sky Sports as well isn't much use to me, but nice to see something like that on a mid tier personal cell plan that's already super generous (hotspotting w/o charge and roll-over data)

Currently on the old $60 endless data plan which is attached to a mobile repayment scheme. Can I change to this new plan without breaking my MRO? I note when I try and change my plan online it says I don't have the right permission. I assume it's the MRO blocking me from doing so.

I agree. I tend to use a lot of data then later realise I should've used Data Hour. Sometimes you just don't know in advance. I'd prefer just having a bit more data upfront than be given 30 hours of free data each month that I end up never using.

Do they turn it off when they're too busy and can't get back to everyone on the night?

That's a shame. No worries though, I'll just wait patiently for the email.
