I am seeing quite a few comments to avoid MR throughout the MR forum. Why is that so? Is it customer service related? Sorry to hijack the thread.

That's a big part of it, yes - mostly due to the fact that they don't have any customer service, ie, no phone number, only an online chat, and if you want to be communicating with someone in NZ, good luck with that.

I am seeing quite a few comments to avoid MR throughout the MR forum. Why is that so? Is it customer service related? Sorry to hijack the thread.

There are many reasons...

1) Dodgy marketing campaigns - stating they're "NZ's Fastest ISP" when in reality they've just got a higher share of Gigabit (or higher) connections meaning their network average is "faster" -

Consider you've got ISP 1 with 10,000 customers but have 3000 customers on Gigabit, but others on mixed technologies such as ADSL, VDSL, Wireless vs ISP 2 with 1000 customers, 950 of those customers on Gigabit and the rest on mixed technologies - who is going to average a faster average speed? And this is the part they're not telling you. ISP 1 technically has a bigger network to handle more customers. And, MyRepublic have had speed issues in the past.

2) Previous staff members on here stating they've not really invested in their network and are doing stuff on the cheap backed up by evidence posted on here and other places (they only have a single point of presence in Auckland). Even one ex-employee sharing facts such as this.

3) They're still being dodgy, purposely deceiving customers into believing they're the best and fastest when this is not at all true. There are far better providers, with better deals around who are not doing stupid things like this.

4) Customer support is terrible - I've even had to contact them before to experience it.

5) Only customer feedback is on sites like this where it has all been terrible. They ban people from their social media pages if you say anything bad to make them appear better than what they are. Remember, social media pages are only as honest as the people running them. You look at 2degrees, Spark and Vodafone who have a whole lot of negative comments on their social media but also engage with these people too in a public way and don't attempt to bury it.

They also use CG-NAT by default and (again - dodgy) have "Gamer Plans" which include a static IP. They even go as far as stating their gamer plans have dedicated gaming support (a Discord server) and once said their gaming plans were on a fully different "gamer network" which was hardly the truth.

Just honestly... The more you look into them from a technical point of view the worse it gets. They're bottom of the barrel as far as providers are concerned and you can get much better, often for cheaper prices with better service.

I've posted a little about picking the right ISP here: https://murfy.nz/2018/02/06/picking-the-right-isp/ but honestly you're better off picking anything but MyRepublic. I've also compared Hyperfibre with regular Gigabit plans and in essentially all cases you're better being with a good ISP on Gigabit than Hyperfibre on a terrible one.

There are people who don't agree with me on here and have had no issues with MyRepublic - with any provider your experience may vary and if you're not having issues then great! But again, there are better options still with providers who have invested in their network and value their customers experience.

That's me in #2

Some people haven't had issues playing Russian Roulette.  Doesn't mean I'd recommend it to them.  They weren't too bad (technical details) for an Auckland-only provider, but they are inadequately setup for anywhere else.  Most of the connections/money is in Auckland, and serving everywhere else is for image.  They would have fewer Auckland connections if they only served Auckland, than if they serve "everywhere", and target Auckland.

Friends don't let friends use MyRepublic.

I see. I was briefly with MR some years ago. I am from Wellington. I noticed my ping went from 1 on Speedtest to 40 I think? To me that indicated that my traffic went to up to Auckland, back to a Wellington speed test server, and it made me wonder if all my traffic was going via Auckland and creating addiotional latency that way, especially if I am connecting to a server in WLG.

Does that sound about right? Is that still the case?

In other words, shop around for something else.

That explains why the actual speed is slower than advertised.

So what was the outcome? What was causing your connection issues?
