Would love to switch to HyperFibre, but the most price competitive option is MyRepublic at $129 with no install fees. That would still be $40 more than what we're paying with 2Degrees, but we run into issues with bandwidth on the max speed we can currently get.

But the reviews here are scathing.  I'm a 60 year old adult with multiple university degrees...tell me what to do.

Avoid MR.

What are you doing that you max out your current connection ? Are you on ADSL or something ?

If you're saturating wifi, then hyperfiber wont help, if you're saturating the upload (which is possible on 1000/500 plans) then the result is normally not that bad for most use as there would have to be an excess of other data to make gaming traffic lag out and that would probably be best addressed by throttling the device doing the upload.

If you are expecting hyperfiber to help with cloud upload speeds, it doesn't really help that much for a single persons use as most things are not that efficient with their bandwidth use and its limited by latency.

Really need to know the use case and problems to know if it will help at all.

And avoid my republic like you would avoid a takeaways with a D food rating.

Are you maxxing out a 'GB' connection (which is in reality 900/400)?

Serious question, I'd love to know what you are doing to do that.

If you are, Hyperfibre may help, but you have to expect to pay. Also factor in that you're going to need to upgrade a fair bit of your home infrastructure - no point have 4gbps into your router if you've only got WiFi or GigE  switches and ethernet hardware.

Have you got 10gbe switches and NICs in your PCs?

a 4k stream is ~25Mbps, so you could run 4 of them and still have 800mpbs left over for Teams etc (which would use at most 5?).

What router do you have?

Hi so how many simultaneous streaming devices, if it's less than 10 then the max they will use is 250Mb/s, in reality those 10 devices might haul 150Mb/s between them, in reality much less.

Zoom/Teams session would be a max of 2Mb/s each.

I suggest something else is wrong. I manage networks with dozens if not hundreds of users doing the exact same as you, with just a GigE internet connection, rarely see issues.

Yup, Im on a fritzbox on 2D gigabit, with multiple systems running (phones, desktops, laptops, server doing torrents etc), 2 kids streaming all the time and not come anywhere close to maxing my connection out.

How many devices are on the wifi ? If a lot, suspect (as other mentioned) that its the wifi being saturated, not your actual internet.

Anyone using torrents thrashing the network ?

Scanned for malware etc lately ?

Should note if you want to take advantage of hyperfyber, you need to also budget for multigig networking gear (assuming you want more than one device to be able to access speeds above 1gbps).

i think your time and effort would be better spent trying to get your current setup working to its fullest.

There is nothing in your use case to suggest you need more than gigabit

Why not log into your Fritz!Box and look at the "Internet > Online Monitor" section to see how busy your connection is? Does that show high downstream (>50Mbit/s) or upstream (>10Mbit/s) usage?

For the streaming devices, can you get them wired as well? For any Wi-Fi devices, can you push them onto the 5Ghz band of your Wi-Fi? How many competing Wi-Fi networks in your vicinity? Do your streaming devices have to stream at max quality? Can you downgrade quality 2-3 notches if the difference is negligible?

Based on the limited info provided I am assuming only limited troubleshooting was done.

I no longer have a Fritzbox so maybe this no longer applies...

They used to have a "Green mode" function that when enabled would limit the LAN ports to 100Mbit/sec. Perhaps this is enabled for your device. Afraid I cannot remember where its set and you may even need to enable "advanced mode".  You want it to be set to Power mode to ensure its allowing the full 1Gbit/sec over the port(s).

I agree with others: You definitely dont need Hyperfibre for your use case. Your set up sounds quite similar to me with the number of devices and types of activities. I'm also on 2degrees gigabit and basically never saturate the line (PS5 downloads about the only time I see significant activity.... even when thats happening kids dont complain about their streaming though)

I am seeing quite a few comments to avoid MR throughout the MR forum. Why is that so? Is it customer service related? Sorry to hijack the thread.

There are definitely users in NZ that have a need for Hyperfibre. There's probably even a dozen or so that couldn't get by with FibreMax without noticing the difference. And price is not an issue for any of the users that would have a use for Hyperfibre over FibreMax (Gigabit-ish) - so they should be going with the best RSP possible.

Hyperfibre is a great technology demonstration - but when someone says they need it over a gigabit product, way way more often than not that person doesn't understand their own use case, or the relative capabilities of Max and Hyperfibre variants.

Pick a good RSP, and spend the extra money on a better router, or good wifi Mesh system, or a NAS, or a Backblaze subscription, or a nice meal... Honestly nearly anything would be a better value proposition than a residential user paying for Hyperfibre.

Cheers - N
