I'm going to assume

  1. You're on Fibre
  2. You're using a wired connection for testing

Have you tried https://fast.com ?

Hey - yes to both.  I work in IT, and have CCNA, so am not a newbie to networking :)  I have indeed tried fast.com.  But I'm more interested in real tests, as opposed to synthetic ones.

@sounddude might be able to help out if theres there's an actual fault with your line. Vocus is generally pretty rock solid so theres probably something wrong..

I'm currently on hold to get through to their tech support people - to at least give them a go at getting this sorted.

Change to Orcon DNS and see if speed improves.

Thanks - tried that and it made no difference.  And yes, I closed down my browser and cleared my DNS cache locally :)

@genegeney did you manage to do any additional testing?

Yup.  I downloaded the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.  On Orcon, with either custom DNS or their ones, I was getting 20 MB/s download speed.  On a 900mbps connection, that's utterly appalling.  Connect, using ExpressVPN, to an Auckland VPN and the very same download rockets to around 50 MB/s download speed.  So the issue is with Orcon's network, nothing on my end.  I'll give their techies a chance, but I just want to go back to 2Degrees where everything was pretty solid, just wish they didn't have PPPoE.

Not sure what speed you are getting - do you mean 20 Mb/s perhaps? Or 20MB/s? Either way, are you in the Waikato perhaps? Others reporting similar issues.

Thanks for your reply.  Nope, I meant 20MB/s - so around 200mb/s.  A bit rubbish for gigabit and way less than I'd get through 2Degrees.  I'm in Wellington.

Hi everyone,

Just moved from 2Degrees to Orcon, as I wanted a provider that doesn't use PPPOE, and am quite disappointed with the download speeds I'm getting.  Downloading from Microsoft or nVidia is maxing out at 20mb/s where it used to be much faster.  I'm also getting quite poor SpeedTest results across the board.

Does anyone know if Orcon have a right to cancel the service within a certain number of days of taking it on?  I think I want to go back to 2Degrees and just stomach the PPPOE.

Cheers,

Gene

Are you sure it is not an issue on your end. I have been with Vocus (provider for the Orcon and other brands) for several years now and what you describe is definitely out of the ordinary.

What servers are you testing against for Speedtest? As suggested above try FAST as that would generally test to on-net servers. If FAST is also poor that would point to possible issues outside the Vocus network and more likely to be somewhere between Vocus and you such as Chorus issues, misconfigured CPE/router issues, etc.

EDIT: Add emphasis to the suggestion above to use the provided DNS addresses. Never use off-net DNS as that is more trouble than it's worth.

Logic says it's not an issue on my end.  I was having a great experience on 2Degrees and the only thing that changed is to switch my firewall interface config from PPPoE to DHCP.  If there was a problem on my end, it would've been there with 2Degrees.

SpeedTest is something I'm less worried about - my issue is with the real life tests of downloading from NVIDIA, Microsoft and Stream.  When I connect to my Auckland based VPN, I get the right speeds.  Again proving that the issue is not on my end.

In terms of the DNS servers, I was using 1.1.1.2 perfectly successfully on 2Degrees....

If you are maxing out at 200mbps, it sounds like it’s a profile issue which is something they can sort out fairly quickly.

Nope, I didn't say that.  SpeedTest can get to 900mbps ish, but it's just a bit all over the place.  Real downloads, like the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft, are only getting to 20MB/s.  On an ExpressVPN Auckland link, I get 50MB/s on the same download.  Same thing with other downloads - perform way better on the VPN.

They're running 'tests' right now - just on hold while they do various things.

Their tests were inconclusive.  The tech lady was really good - completely agreed that, as I get the right speed with the VPN, the issue is with their network and not my setup or Chorus.  They've asked me to monitor it for 24 hours and, if it still isn't up to scratch, they'll let me cancel and go back to 2Degrees.

Can they pop you into a different IP range in case it's routing related? Some issues would be outside of the ISPs control, but if they advertise ranges to different upstream providers/ peering links or exchanges etc they can influence return traffic which could in some cases help.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  Orcon are happy to let me leave and rejoin 2Degrees without penalty.  Hopefully 2Degrees will remove PPPoE some time soon.  Until then, they seem to offer the best performance.  Now to try and rejoin easily...

None of this sounds right.

Using a PPPoE or DHCP should have no effect. Sounds like a problem with your network.

Yes its all 2degrees. The internal merger is in progress.
