No sure why the attitude. The MoRAN release in no way made that clear??

I made it clear in my post above that it was between Vodafone & 2degrees

Spark is only involved with RCG sites

Does this mean that Spark are on it too because my daughter is 2D like me and at her boyfriends family place slightly out of CHCH she gets good cell and her boyfriend on Spark gets none - Again - All very anecdotal but anecdotal evidence can be good evidence if you trust the mouths it comes from :)

You can view a handy map of all the sites - including RCG - here, maintained by one of our good GZers. If you are actually attached to RCG it won't matter what network you're on, the experience will be roughly the same. Vodafone & Spark have more 700MHz spectrum than 2degrees but if the coverage is marginal that won't make any material difference. Speaking for myself, we were in Mokau having a coffee while our car charged. I had full coverage; my wife on Spark couldn't get a call from her dad. So yeah, each network will have some places where they are better and some places where they are worse - and if you are a frequent user in those places that should definitely factor into your decisions - but on the whole, everyone's about the same.

They might be like me and just assume nothing changes and have not really noticed - Alternately could this be a case where if there is a very very weak Spark tower it'll try and hold onto that rather than going over to MoRAN?

I know years back when 2D was still in its youth people said while the VF roam was ok sometimes at others a phone would very stubbornly hold onto a weak unusable 2D signal and not switch.

You can't attach to a Spark tower, ever.* The MoRAN towers are transmitting a real 2degrees signal - not roaming - so there is no way to tell you're using one of those. It's the same idea as the RCG service; there are just two flavours of technical implementation, MOCN and MoRAN. And whilst the roaming agreement covered very large areas originally, MoRAN is at the level of individual sites, so you might have 1 MoRAN site surrounded by a bunch of 2degrees-owned sites, for example.

* Exception: there is literally no other coverage, in which case your handset can camp on it for the purposes of emergency calls. This is not a true attach, just keeping tabs on the tower to execute the special emergency access procedure if you call 111. If there is even a sniff of home network, you'll use that instead.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

Thanks Salty - All very good useful information to tuck away in the back of the brain ;)    -  I took a look at gis.geek - I am a member (free) there as I refer to it from time to time when recommending a 4G connection to a client from afar as it helps make a decision around who might have the best signal and at least which facing window sill to put it on if signal is weak.

I'll stick it out with 2D for the interim as I still feel a fair amount of loyalty to a company who I've been with in various forms for a very long time and my work connection for fibre is less important than my home one as that's were my server is for my client facing software so I can put up with small outages due to config changes etc.

The mobile side we'll see as my plan has gone up and I can actually save $35 a month switching to Vodafone as on their plan I can go on a 12GB data plan for ten months and go to the unlimited plan over Dec/Jan. Also Vodafone used to give me free data sims for tablets to share the data which 2D don't do so if they still do I can take advantage of that in the Caravan.

It seems it stands to reason now that the odds of there being cellular coverage with Spark somewhere that there isn't anything for either VF or 2D (and hence Moran) is very slim so it seems like Spark potentially have the weakest network now??
