I’ve sent 3 SMS to this fresh number (data sim for my 5G portable wifi) - none of the messages came through. Ironically, it has voicemail and that is packed full of scam calls.

Verified it can receive SMS from domestic, Spark and One.

Hi,

I am having the exact same issue.

I have tested a few scenarios and it does seem to be handset related.

I have had a number of people on 2Degrees (Android) who cannot get their texts through to me (Voda AU).

My daughter (NZ) is 2Degrees and has an iphone - and she can get hold of me via txt with no issues.

I too have been in touch with both 2Degrees and Voda AU network support. Both blame each other. They have done message tracing off a number of NZ 2D handsets and seem to be getting a message back saying our numbers are not valid - ironic because the txt messages are responding to one I have sent!

The issues seem to have started around end of October/early November as we have tracked text history back to sometime after Oct 28th.

Is anyone havingthis issue with iPhone? Wondering if there was a handset/androind update that changed some settings for 2Degrees?

@lumpycamnz What does non Android mean?

Any reason you are both not using Whatsapp or something similar?

So update (or lack of):

  • No acknowledgement from 2 Degrees on the formal complaint that I submitted via email so far.
  • I just rang 2 Degrees customer support regarding the fault I logged earlier and there has been no updates on the fault.

@Linux - I happen to use SMS/MMS as it 'just works', is free (pretty much to anywhere over here), is integrated with the rest of my messages. I do occasionally use Wechat, Signal and Whatsup (particularly after experiencing this issue).
Granted, on the NZ side, SMS to AU is usually free, MMS definitely is not.

@lumpycamnz I’m the one who raised this issue to start with and it not a handset issue as I receive messages from every other carrier in Nz apart from 2D one of my sisters is on spark and Vodafone Nz and I can receive them fine just from my mum and other brother who are on 2D.

Also tried this on multiple devices just to make sure it wasn’t my handset
I have a iPhone 12 and not receiving texts so I decided to ask my boss who has a Samsung phone and he also never received the texts.

Apart from texts not being received I can text them all good and they receive I can also ring and they can ring me.

So that’s why I raised this issue spoke with voda Au for like a week and they investigated it and came back with that i need to get in touch with 2D as they are the ones sending.

Hope this helps

Ive had exactly the same issue.

I have spoken to a network tech at 2D - they are washing their hands - no issue from their end. They pushed the issue to Voda AU.

I have spoken to a network tech at Voda AU - they sat on the call and monitored traffic through the network - they were not seeing txt from 2D -> Voda arriving. They were seeing outbouad (Voda AU -> 2D going out).

Pushed it back to 2D. I am now back with 2D who are still refusing to help which is hard when I am in another country.

When I talk about handsets - I mean handsets in NZ - those sending txts.

My testing has show any message sent from an android based handset on 2d in NZ does not arrive. I have tested this with 4 different 2d customers.

Testing also shows that messages from a 2D customer on iPhone are successfully delivered to Voda AU.

So I think there is not an issue with the network as messages are getting through. My testing is pointing to Android device on 2D is the issue.

@Linux - Two of the 2d customers are my elderly in-laws who (suprisingly) don't have/want constant access to data so any IP based solution is not an option.

Txt and voice are the only means to stay in touch which it is why I am keen to get this sorted!

@lumpycamnz You did not speak to any network tech on the phone, You may have spoke to someone in a technical role and they should be passing the issue on further up the food chain

Based off your post @lumpycamnz, I can only surmise that:

  • 2 Degrees iPhone users sending you messages are probably using iMessage (blue bubbles) as opposed to SMS/MMS (green bubbles)
  • As it is iMessage, it effectively bypasses both carriers (2 Degrees and Vodafone AU) and is delivered using Apples infrastructure.

It is my position that:

  • It is not a handset issue - I have personally tested using an Apple iPhone without iMessage enabled and have replicated the fault.
  • This issue is specific to 2 Degrees sending SMS to Vodafone AU
  • It is unknown whether this issue is due to economic (cost) or a technical fault.
  • 2 Degrees, as sending party is best placed to escalate this with their internal and upstream stakeholders including Vodafone AU.
  • It is unreasonable for 2 Degrees to 'wash their hands' of the fault as they actively market the ability to text message Australia and charge (on casual prepaid) per message. I understand that that SMS is not a guaranteed service, however this looks and feels like a legitimate fault that they need to investigate.
  • Its my intention to raise a complaint with the TDR if 2 Degrees fails to acknowledge the complaint within 5 working days (finishing COB this Friday).

@cokemaster well put bro 100percent I’m on board with this and sounds like they just need to suck it up and investigate to find the issue, hopefully if enough of us file complaints something might get done

The issue is under investigation.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

I'm having the same problem, my parents are on 2degrees in NZ and I'm on Vodafone in NZ and haven't received replies from them since 7 November 2023. Normally I would get their text most of the time, though occasionally I wouldn't. They still receive the text messages I send though

I've spoken to Vodafone and they say its not an issue on their end but 2degrees didn't know why it wasn't working when mum asked.

I don't want to change provider because Vodafone has the best plan I've found that meets my needs, similar plans with other providers are much more expensive.

Hopefully someone can find the issue so 2degrees can fix it
