If you dont have an option for wireguard or a vpn on your router then installing a good vpn on your mobile devices is a good thing - despite what others here have to say.

When you say "vpn on your router" do you mean that literally? I have a obi router wireless 6 supplied by slingshot and feed by fiber. The concept of "vpn on your router" installing sounds awfully scary job.

Trust your home network. Install Tailscale on all your devices and select one at home that's always on as an exit node. Every time you connect to that network from outside it will route to that device and use your home connection. You will be safe from u secure WiFi.

But yeah, local ISPs aren't interested in your traffic.

Your orbi should have the ability to setup an OpenVPN connection, from there you can just create the VPN network and you can access it from a mobile device when away.

I use tailscale at home but thats because i have an always on device that can run the exit node for me.

If you want something reasonably close to privacy, use tails+tor and don't login to anything.

I managed to get a lifetime subscription to Windscribe several years ago for a one-off payment and I even got a discount on that. I don't use it often but I find it handy to have a VPN with a good selection of overseas servers available for the odd moments that I do need such a thing. I have always found Windscribe to be a good product and I have never had any issues with it. I would not use any VPN for important privacy protection but it is useful to be able to choose my location for testing from time to time.

Oh Cool I now have my apple tv setup with exit node and a subnet? not sure whats that for more reading....

the final step is to see if or how i can easily connect to Remote Desktop from OS through tailscale

So, again, there is no need for it. Using Tailscale from one node in the network to another node in the same network to be used as exit point does not add any protection.

If you wanted to use a VPN to add security then the only use case would be when connecting to some else's Wi-Fi that you don't control and don't know if it's secure. Then a VPN would encrypt your traffic, preventing the owner of that Wi-Fi to see it.

As mentioned, a paid third-party VPN is not necessarily safer as it's outside your control and they may look at your traffic.

The Tailscale with an exit node suggestion was to cover this use case only.

tailscale with exit node just allows you to route your traffic through your home network connection when you are outside your network. your ISP can still see the traffic coming from the internet connection your exit node uses.

Tailscale turned on inside your own network will only hinder network performance. i have the software running, but its disconnected on all my clients in my own network except the exit node.

I can turn it on when outside on mobile and browse my home network like I'm there, and if I want to turn the exit node on so all the traffic gets tunnelled through my home network's internet connection.
