Irihapeti:

It's a Motorola G4 Play, running postmarketOS these days. Is there a simple test I can to do check this?

If it does become a cellular paperweight, I can still use it as a media player and a wireless access point.

Of course there's a simple test: set it on 4G only and try sending a txt! Which it does successfully. My brain must be out to lunch that I didn't think of that sooner. 🙄

I got the warning on my Huawei Nova 3i but it is on 4G now so don't know why I was warned.

Wonder if any MVNO's using the 2d network send out any advance warnings of next years switchoff.

Does your phone support VoLTE?

Irihapeti:

I've got a phone that switches from 4G to 3G on voice calls. Can one of these phones still do txts and cellular data, or does it become a total paperweight as far as use on the cellular network is concerned?

@Irihapeti Should do SMS over 4G fine but you have not provided make / model

I have a Nokia 6.1, it'll be replaced this year however the preferred network type is set to 4G.  When I received yesterday's email from 2degrees I followed their link to see if my phone was VoLTE enabled and was surprised to see they had no Nokia phones listed at all.

Amusingly, half an hour after me receiving this email from 2degrees we had our office electricity smart meter's modem replaced.  The tech said the old modem was still running 2G which surprised me.  The new is 4G.

Doesn't look like it so that will be the reason. Thanks.

They must have all calls over the RCG network require a VOLTE enabled handset.

Vfone are switching off GSM in 2025.

Are you sure they haven't said One NZ is committed to leaving their 2G network operational until at least end of 2025?

I can't find any recent public sources committing to an actual end date for 2G.

@Linux

https://www.thercg.co.nz/rcg-network/

In a world-first, the RCG network uses 4G Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology whereby all three NZ mobile networks are using the same radio spectrum band for the first time. This means all three providers will share one piece of infrastructure including the pole, antenna, power, and backhaul.

Spark, One NZ , and 2degrees have allocated 700MHz spectrum to RCG, to enable the 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) with VoLTE (Voice over LTE or high-definition calling) rural network.

RCG will mainly use 700 MHz frequency because it is the spectrum best suited for rural users, and this will be supported with 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies if additional capacity is required.

A small number of our sites will have a 3G MORAN – Mobile Operator Radio Access Network overlay, mainly on sites along state highways and at tourist locations.

We are tasked with building a world-class network with minimal funding and therefore our site designs are innovative, cost-efficient, and built to meet the needs of users. Our sites can be 10m – 40m in height depending on where they are located, how many people they need to provide coverage to, or we could use a small cell to provide an island of coverage at a remote walking track or tourist hotspot car park.

Each site is required to meet government targets of providing fast wireless broadband, connectivity to a tourist location, and/or coverage to rural state highways.

Our infrastructure will also accommodate equipment from at least one local Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISPA

@Linux

As a ex vodafone employee you will know who I am talking about.

Hi Alan,

Yes JP is correct - voice & sms will continue to work on 2G which is planned to be turned off in December 2025.

Regards

Sharina

(At least) many rural ones in Taupo do not - it has been quite entertaining reading all the Karen's complain on FB why they are only getting 0-1 bars even when standing right next to the RCG cell tower.
