Unfortunately, it's not just Oppo phones.

I have the problem with my Xiaomi Mi8 lite running Pixel Experience ROM. I have a 2degrees SIM. Could there be a setting that I could try? I wonder if I should replace my SIM card to see if that fixes the problem. Would a 2degrees shop give us a free SIM? I can't use SMS since it sends 4 times over 4 minutes and drives the recipient crazy :-(

Further investigation shows it might be more related to the chipsets rather than Oppo as such. We are aware of some other handsets with similar issues.

None of this turned up in our testing - we used mostly late model Samsungs as we have a plentiful supply of those in the test team and unlike many handsets they allow you to change the SMSC service centre, which is required for 3G testing. In any case we have sent traces to Oppo for them to look at today.

Thanks for looking into it SaltyNZ. Fingers crossed and I'll wait to see if there is a fix. If you need me to check anything on my phone as you work through it, just let me know. cheers

@SaltyNZ - sorry to bother you, but is this a) a known issue, or b) worth trying to get past the Tier 1 support if I was to try and report it?

If by chance your handset is an Oppo then yes it is very much a known issue. We have been investigating it over the last week as we have just completed a cutover to a new SMSC so everyone is looking at any potential SMS issues - including some that turn out to have been pre-existing. Oppo handsets have a limit on how long a SIP call ID they can handle and it turns out that the call IDs in our IMS core are just long enough that when the SMSC appends a bit to the end for the final status of the message (i.e. to tell the handset it was successfully submitted) then the handset fails to process the message, assumes it failed, and sends it again on 3G.

This was happening before we did the cutover but now it's getting some attention. We are expecting an engineering firmware build today or tomorrow that we can install so we can do testing in the preprod IMS environment. Unfortunately our only option in the core is a switch that's really simple to turn on but also might break the entire IMS network so the likely answer is that we will need Oppo to fix their firmware.

Thanks for clarifying the issue, I have found that forcing network to 2g or 3g it resolves the issue, but not if you rely on wifi calling.

Any idea if Oppor have been informed and whether or not they are working on a solution?

TIA Mike

Yes, if you either force 3G or disable IMS, you won't have a problem. But equally as such IMS has better call quality and faster call setup. Oppo are definitely on the case - they are extremely keen to make sure it's fixed. They have been really helpful.

As I said though, Oppo was the first reported and seems to be the most widespread but it is not just an Oppo problem. We have examples from some other handsets as well which may well turn out to be very similar.

I was just going to chime in to say that disabling 4G calling this morning on my Xiaomi Mi8 lite has fixed the SMS issue. I guess I am down to 3G only (I don't have 5G on my phone) but seems to have sorted the issue for now.

My wife Oppo A54 and my Oppo A74 are both having the problem and are on 2degress. Good to hear that others acknowledge there is an issue. I had done a factory reset on mine and before I did any logins or apps I gave it a go, and it failed. If I put my SIM in my old Doogee there is no problem so I was assuming it was the phone. Has anyone had the issue and gone to another provider and the problems gone? Thats what I am thinking of doing.

We will be testing a core config change tonight that *might* fix the issue. We will know more tomorrow.

Our IMS core vendor turned out to be completely correct when they said it would either work or blow up the IMS network, so we had to roll it back immediately.

Starting probably on Monday (since for obvious reasons we don't tend to make big network changes on the weekend when there's nobody in the office next day) we will have to move IMS traffic off the new SMSC and back to the old IMS core IPSMGW until we can fix the root cause.

@SaltyNZ - I'm with Orcon for mobile.

Past couple days, I have not been receiving SMS verification codes from company websites.

Is this a known issue?

Is the SMS duplication issue related to SMS messages not being received?

The 2degrees status page says the issue of SMS OTP messages not working was resolved on 14 May, but perhaps it's not fully resolved?

I've restarted my iPhone but no luck.

Please PM me if you need more details.

We have an issue with one content partner who is sending multipart messages in a way that when the new SMSC delivers it, it doesn't play nicely, which results in that message getting stuck a queue for your phone and everything else piles up behind it. Normal default validity is 3 days so that actually causes a problem.

We implemented a workaround last night that should detect the particular error we receive and make that message fail immediately. It doesn't fix the issue but it stops others getting delayed.

There are no known issues with OTP left as such but maybe you've got a bad message stuck? Feel free to PM me your MSISDN and we can have a look.

As an interim workaround today we are running a partial rollback from the IPSMGW builtin to the new SMSC, to the old IPSMGW in the IMS core. We have confirmed that once the registrations have sorted themselves out, the issue is resolved for affected handsets. Traffic will remain on the old IPSMGW until we have fixed the root cause.

The chipset manufacturer will shortly be releasing a patch to the modem firmware which we can test against the new SMSC to confirm this fixes the problem. That's not a 'real' fix though, for two reasons - firstly we don't control if and when customers actually update their devices, but also because the same chipsets are used in other handsets which are also affected (some Nokias and Xiaomis are known to be) but do not have official 2D firmware builds. What it will do though is allow us to confirm that what they thought was the issue really was (i.e. chipset doesn't like the long call ID in the final acknowledgement) - so we can be more confident that pursuing a change in the core network will resolve it once and for all.

By tomorrow morning everyone should be pointing back at the old IPSMGW and you should find it's working normally again.
