Linux:

.... If handsets are connected to Wi-Fi calling and zero mobile coverage they will not get the alert

Both of my phones were on Wi-Fi calling, mobile coverage marginal, so that could explain our situation. However, it does seem pretty daft that it will not come through, although I'm sure there is some sort of technical reason as to why not. For everything else, operating the phones on Wi-Fi seems to be no different to a mobile connection.

The alerts would normally be targeted to specific geographic areas, and perhaps that is determined based on what transmission tower the phone is connected to?

Three phones here tonight on 2d - son received it, Mrs C and I did not. Mairangi Bay, Auckland N Shore. iPhones 12 and 2x 14.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

No cell coverage here so wifi calling only.
4 phones, two on 2degrees, with one having a spark eSIM as well, and two phones on Kogan.
Different models of iPhones.
No alert on any of them.

North Otago

I hope everyone is reporting these problems. If the experts don't know about the problems they can't fix them.

Why?

I’ve seen others posting online saying they got the alert and they have no cell coverage with wifi calling only.

There's none and theres 'none'.

It's cellular broadcast directly from the tower. Not over wifi or normal provider comms.

To the point where I think it Doesn't tend to care for the mobile provider, as long as it has a tower to talk to with the appropriate handshaking.

So what someone might say has none, could still be enough for CB but not stable data or voice over data.

And then theres absolutely none. Not even CB.

@CYaBro The handset requires mobile coverage from a physical cell-site to deliver the alert as the alerts are not delivered over Wi-Fi calling

It is called working as designed

I report it every time. I keep bumping the mute switch top left side. With the physical mute on there is no audio on the phone and I don’t feel it vibrate in my pocket.

Normally this isn’t a problem as calls and texts go through to my Apple Watch so I’m aware of them that way.

The emergency alert for some reason does not go through to watch. I’ve reported it the last three times so I’m not going to let them know a fourth time.

I found it in my notifications so I’ll see it in the end, could just take a few hours.

pixel on skinny got it

redmi on 2D didn't get it (but got it last year)

cheap import tablet capable of taking a sim but has never had one in it - got it.

so it seems having no sim is more reliable than having a 2D sim 😂

potentially enough cellular strength to deliver the broadcast message but not necessarily enough handset to tower signal strength to make a meaningful call / data session.

remember, these alerts don’t need much “strength” to travel.
