Yes, but nothing out of the ordinary for me (downloading overnight with Xnet). 6 hours and only managed just over 1GB downloaded last night; good nights I get around 3GB. Perhaps some loss of speed recently but as I say I'm not sure if it's my ISP or RS.

Bad nights, and I lose internet and don't download anything (switching to Orcon next month).

EDIT: Didn't realise this is in the Orcon section (read on front page). How slow has it been? As I said, I've ben considering Orcon as my new ISP but now...

I've been on the Orcon+ network since 11th march and have been very pleased with the internet speeds overall since then. Up until last friday that is.
Rapidshare used to give me up to 1.5MB/s with only a few connections (ie < 10), but on friday, the average speed per connection dropped to a miniscule 10kb/s. Similar with Megaupload (although im only a registered free user, I used to get ~100-200kb/s on a single connection).
Even international public mirrors for Linux distro's etc would be lucky to get 100kb/s.
National and Aus speeds seem to be unchanged however.
Also, it appears interleaving on the connection decided to turn itself on :S
I understand that ppl on Skype etc should not get cut off mid call, and dont mind some 'legit' QoS, the whole reason I have an RS account is so I dont have to wait and complain about the lack of seeders when downloading torrents. But I want my fast HTTP traffic back.
And its not just file downloading, even overseas websites that are not mirrored locally/in aus load slowly.
You cant tell me that on friday orcon got so many new customers that they cut my effective international capacity by a factor of 100

Interestingly enough, after about 10 connection dropouts (the gateway connection, not the DSL), the latest lasting several minutes (around 2am) downloads seem to be back to normal (300kb/s from MU, my RS is depleted so cant test it lol). And interleaving is off again.

Hopefully its back to what it was pre-friday, and stays that way.

How are you getting 1.5MB/s, max i was getting was about 700KB/s. maybe your location?

Well our line speed is ~15mbit (the exchange is only ~100 m away if you stand on our back balcony in out apartment building. Of course, 1.5MB/s is off peak type hours, during that day with 4 connections I get around 100kb/s per connection, if I use more connections though (like 20) then I'll still get equivalent to max line speed.

Same problem here, on Orcon and getting very slow downloads from rapidshare. Another similar site was 1MB/s so it is not the internet overall.

Yep for me it's fine. I had experienced the same slow down as others over the last little while, but as of today it seems to be back to its normal fast speed again.

Not for me, still very very slow. 30k total over 10 connections.

Wow..

If your primary reason for having the internet was to check your email, and your email took 30 mins to send / receive per message on your ISP but only took 1 second on other ISPs, wouldn't you switch?

After a 45 minute wait on the phone, Orcon said they had implemented shaping on Rapidshare and Megaupload and P2P for about a week. The assistant said the more people complain, the more likely it is to be reviewed.

I'll likely be complaining via switching ISPs, so good luck to the rest of you.

According to Orcon, shaping is occuring during peak times, that is the only time you can experience normal speed is during weekdays. Weeknights and weekends are out.

Hi

I pay for internet access. Not for Orcon's idea of what the internet should be. Are you an ISP or not?

I don't ask for you to cripple my ability to use certain parts of the internet. Internet traffic is whatever your users choose to use. There is no way it can be "disproportionate" when we pay you for bandwidth and data. If I use more data I pay for it. If the problem is cost then change your pricing plans to reflect that.

I have pointed out that the way you are de-prioritizing the traffic is breaking any ability to download anything from these sites. That is a fault that needs fixing. It will continue to be a fault until you fix it.

What happens when Steam games take up too much bandwidth? do you just cripple that as well? or buy more bandwidth ? What about the PSN ? I use lots of data from both those services and with this precedent you have set whenever there is what YOU define as disproportianate traffic you will without consultation with your users cripple the services.

What's next for the cut? Does Skype or Gizmo challenge your VOIP services ? oh lets just cripple it.
Traffic rising faster than costs cover? - just cripple whatever you don't want to carry.

Where is the definition of "peak times". Where in your advertising and marketing do you state that you will pro-actively prevent your users from doing what they want with their connections?

I think that Orcon should not be able to advertise it's services as "internet access" because that is not what you are providing.

Please forward this to whatever imbecile made the decision to make these particular websites impossible to use. Your policy is idiotic and should be changed.

I believe they have the cisco equipment to do per user/account shaping so I'm not sure why they are bothering to rate shape p2p and http download sites in peak time..

For example: If at 6pm they have they have 3000 active users and 1Gbit/s of international bandwidith available, then each user should get access to ~350 Kbit/s of bandwidth (note the different between bits and bytes, 350 Kb = ~50 KB fyi) and if not all users are using their full allocation others can burst to whatever is not being used.

Rate shaping protocols and sites for all connections is the old way to shape traffic before traffic management applianaces got fast or smart enough to handle per account shaping. I wonder if they had to revert to this because in practice the "per user" shaping was causing latancy problems and not able to keep up.

Also remember this: You are "paying" for a residential bandwidth service, there are no speed gaurantees no SLA agreements. What you pay doesn't come anywhere near the cost of provisioning international bandwidth at 1:1 with your sync rate to your exchange (if that's what you're expecting). I have a feeling most ISP's in NZ provision residential DSL with a 100:1 contention ratio rather than the 20:1 or 50:1 you see in the UK.

Another thing, why have NZ isp's been so slow to look at p2p caching, for example I know of at least Aussie ISP that does 600 Mbit/s of traffic from their PeerApp p2p caching for bit torrent and http download sites. Taking that load off of international links has to be beneficial surely?
