CYaBro: There was a latency spike last night around 10pm.

YouTube and page loads was having great issues around then for me also. The spinning circle becomes tedious

So far so good. I think next up is seeing real life Elves! Man, never seen this behaviour before and I have seen a lot.

Is there a way to get onto the ONT to see NIC stats? I think they do have a static address on 192.168.1.x somewhere. Can I plug a laptop in port 2 to access that?

Ok, internet connection still going strong! Wow 2degrees, you have REALLY impressed me by locating such an iffy issue in next to no time. Again and again 2degrees impresses me with all sorts of things. There's just no reason to ever contemplating moving on.

To prove your cable swap didn't just coincide with them increasing capacity somewhere in their network resolving peak time congestion you have to swap back for a bit and replicate the issue with the old cable to verify.

True and I may do it but still going to wait 1-2 weeks

Yep, another week no issues. I guess 2degrees aced it. Thoroughly impressed. It was the ethernet cable.

I had a Dynamix cable go bad on me once, causing slight packet loss that only manifested in slow international downloads (TCP slow start) .Took me ages to consider an untouched perfectly working cable might stop working, but sure enough a new one fixed it.

2degrees and their wholesale customers can certainly run the ONT diagnostics - not sure if they have added it to self-service for end customers yet though.

Thanks for reminding me. What 2degrees will have done is gone into the ONT to check which interface had the packet drops. You can't see that internally as everything upstream of your router is "The Internet".
The ONTs have a UI that is accessible but it is on 192.168.1.0/24 and that clashes with most internal networks so you can't (easily) bend that device into your network. At least my network foo capitulates at that point.

My thinking is that the cause is probably similar technically but not die to a bust cable but more the cause of an unshielded cable. I was using a 2m long super thin network cable going through a patch panel. In a 19" rack that is full of gear. With lots of power cables etc. So the electrostatic mess in there seems to have affected the network. Now I am using a thick Cat6(A?) cable that is at least moderately shielded and haven't had an issue since.

I have always known that electromagnetic interference has an effect but I have always seen it as a sort of Boogeyman. This is the 1st time I have ever seen and (sort of) proven that it actually happens. Which is fascinating and cool and I am gobsmacked that within 30 seconds 2degrees had me on the right path. I argued for 3 more minutes believing that he was trying to brush me off with "your problem not mine". So I am VERY apologetic to the guy that helped me but he absolutely aced it. Chapeau!

Just to set the record straight on this one, when an ONT is in production, there is no GUI to access. Nothing to do with an IP clash on internal networks - that would be a big problem!

The IP addressing on the sticker was from when Chorus offered ONTs to be configured in RGW mode - that is, the ONT acting as both the ONT and the router. This is no longer available.
