Linux:

@steadysteve First off are you 100% sure it is a SMS that you are sending and not a imessage or RCS?

Yes, 100% sure ... old guy here - don't use either of those systems

Linux:

In my years at VodafoneNZ heard many times number is not blocked and when you do a SMS trace you see the SMS is actually delivered and the number was actually blocked by the handset

Hopefully that's not the case ... I've raised a ticket now, so we shall wait and see

Linux: Sounds like B party has blocked your number in error on the handset

I suggested that to him and told him to take it to his providers shop. They checked it and said the number wasn’t blocked. Never thought of focus though, maybe he pressed something without realising. Will get him to look into it again.

Great news. Sent a text to the older Oz person to go to a different store than the one who told him number wasn’t blocked. He did and sure enough the number was blocked. I suggest the OP does the same and tells the other party to persist in ensuring the recipient has not blocked him and to try another expert.

steadysteve:

A few of us had this issue in 2023/24.

Do you know if the Australian number is ported in from another provider or directly issued by Vodafone AU?

Edit: I just did a test using 2 Degrees to my Vodafone AU issued number, SMS came through no issues. Was your target number a previous Optus or Telstra number (or one of their MVNO’s)?

OK, so it's not a new thing then ...

I will try to find out if the aus number is ported to vodafone or not

Just cause a similar issue happened once before does not mean it is related

Could you use a messaging app (ie: whats app. facebook messenger, telegram etc) instead and bypass all these telco sms issues?

I did use signal for a while, but I live in a remote area and internet connection is flakey

Just in the off chance someone crosses the wires, there are two distinct issues being described here:

  • @Eva888's which is an inability to call a certain Australian mobile number. Has been resolved, root cause: calling number was blocked on other parties device.

  • @steadysteve's which is an inability for a Vodafone Australian customer to receive SMS from his 2 Degrees mobile*. A ticket has been raised with 2 Degrees.

    * There have been previous instances of this which may or may not be related.

@steadysteve does your handset support RCS? If yes then you should enable it

Unless you have an iphone then you can't

I can't reliably use google or meta services because of patchy internet access

Anyway, not really wanting to find a workaround for the actual problem here, and seeing that 2degrees seems to shine out as the most popular among the "big three", they really should be able to provide a service where text messages are not lost in neverland. imo

boosacnoodle: Why… were they blocked?

Because older totally non tech savvy person must have pressed something without realising it. The most annoying part was that I sent him to a mobile shop to check if it was blocked months ago and they didn’t find it. He reported back to us that it wasn’t blocked. Only when I saw this thread was reminded and told them to try again at a different shop.

@steadysteve Do you have broadband at home? Enable Wi-Fi calling on the handset

Wi-Fi calling will also handle incoming & outgoing SMS
