I havent had any notification from Orcon. At all.

Pretty pathetic.

Oh well, time to move elsewhere me thinks. Have been a little disappointed really. Especially with the delivery of YouTube. This is just another reason.

Got mine last night as well..... 80% of the sites in the "O zone" Ive never heard of.
They all seem to be "niche" audiences, therefore little traffic anyway. (apart from TVNZ, thats cool)

Hi guys,

Yes, we definitely are keeping an eye on what you have to say.

Obviously we knew this wasn't going to be good news for our users, so I can completely understand why some of you would have found this to be a shock, and be pretty frustrated.

Please allow me to address a couple of the concerns, and explain a little of the reasoning behind the changes.

Firstly, the overage at $1/GB just was not sustainable for us. We got it wrong when we came up with the plans, and now that we have a significant number of customers on the network, and more than 12 months experience we were able to see that.

Essentially we had a couple of options, one of which was to increase the base prices of the plans (which would have effected everyone), the other was to increase the price of excess data (which affects those using excess data - i.e. user pays).

Because putting up prices is never going to win you fans it is something we had to consider long and hard, but in the end putting up the overage price seemed like the most fair way to do it. To confirm this price change does not take effect until 23 May.

To address some of the concerns that we knew users would have we took the following steps:
1. We introduced some new smaller data add-on's: 5GB for $8 and 10GB for $12 (previously the smallest available was 25GB)
2. Where a user could save money by adding a data pack (based on an average of their last 3 months usage) we have proactively encouraged them to add a data pack. If this applies to you you will have received an email with a plan recommendation in it.
3. We have introduced the O Zone, a 'free surf' group of sites for all Orcon broadband customers, which includes one of New Zealand's most content rich sites: tvnzondemand.co.nz. We hope to expand this concept over time, and have already had some great suggestions from Orconites.

So while prices for overage have increased, we have gone some way toward mitigating the size of the impact on our customers.

Relative to our competitors our data pricing is still extremely competitive.

Thanks for all your feedback, and please let me know if you have any further questions.

Some of you may also be interested in the discussion that has been going on via twitter - I have answered a number of questions over there... http://twitter.com/Orcon

Oh, and yes, the email should go to the main address on your Orcon account (you can see what this is by logging in to My Orcon: http://www.orcon.net.nz/site/login).

If you didn't receive an email last night, and your address is right in My Orcon please let me know. We will be posting details of these changes on our website also later this week, as well as details of the O Zone.

Nice to know you are listening.

How about making an off-peak period? It doesn't have to be totally free like Slingshot but could a reduced cost period at night.

Also it's frustrating that Orcon doesn't offer caps for those who want to budget for a certain amount of data.

Thanks for that info Duncan :)
As leemajors said, nice to know the ISP is taking notice of the people :)

I guess overall for myself ,an increase of $3 (+ the $5 I was already paying) a month for a total of 10gb wont kill me yet :)

Offpeak or data banking would be nice too ;) But Im not going to leave if you say no :-p

Although i didnt get the email yet, i checked the webpage, i am now personally paying 20$ per month / 240 per year additional to my previous bills, NOT including any increased additional overage charges

i am not happy with that at all, and will be changing ISPs, and taking every connecton i have moved to LLU with me.

I think the 100% price hike on data is totally worth it given that I can now
surf websites like http://thealist.co.nz/ for free.

Thanks Orcon ! .. Looking at beautiful Aucklanders for free is really awesome.

We adjusted the price of data blocks both on Orcon+ and regular Orcon connections, so now data block and overage pricing is the same across both. Some of the data blocks actually got cheaper in the process. We also introduced new smaller data add-on's for Orcon+ customers (5GB and 10GB blocks, previously the smallest was 25GB) and a 200GB data block for the power users among you.

FYI, the new data block pricing (for both Orcon+ and Orcon broadband connections) is:

5GB for $8
10GB for $12
25GB for $25
50GB for $50
100GB for $80
200GB for $160
