Hi guys

I just received the notice from Orcon that there will be a price increase on the excess quota. It will be increase to $2/GB.... OUCH!!!

On the benefit side, they are also going to introduce free webpages access zone too...

What are you thoughts on that?

Jacky

Good on them! It seems ISP's have been running their broadband part of business at a loss for so long that they now find they can't deliver a quality service.
Would be good to see others charging more realistically, without the cross subsidy (tolls & land-line bundles)

I assume that Telecom wholesale customers will still be paying $2/GB as they always have. I don't see much incentive for going on Orcon+, especially if you live in a cabinetised area (as I do). Makes me wonder what the difference in margins are for Orcon and Orcon+. Obviously they're just trying to stay afloat while they put pressure on the ComCom to push Telecom's wholesale pricing down.

Orcon hasn't exactly done anything to put a smile on their customers' faces lately, and this is no exception.

Sounds like you work for a power company.  Higher prices are great for everyone.  Guess you will be thrilled with the new Sky TV price increase then..

Absolutely! Which will mean my Sky sub will cost me exactly no more than it does now:) (Don't have sky).
The reality is though, ISP's have had very low margins for a long time. They make most of their money on add on services, or bundling all your extras. That combined with many customers wanting everything for nothing; it's a recipe that just does not work.

I can understand the increase. Hopefully the data packs don't increase in price too much. The O Zone idea is great though. I use a few gig each month on tvnzondemand. Now if only Telecom and Telstraclear would peer...

since this is likely for LLU customers who currently pay 1$ per gig, a 100% price increase is disgraceful, i will likely reconsider moving any additional connecions to Orcon in the future, imho a 100% increase not warranted, 25% perhaps i wouldnt be so annoyed.

Personally im getting sick of Orcon jacking up the prices for exisiting plans customers already (and recently) signed up to, i can recall off the top of my head, 5$ a month rental increase on broadband (non LLU) and a large increase in national calling toll rates.

If the data packs have been increased in such bad taste as the overage, i will start moving existing connections away from Orcon

The $1 per GB pricing is great, a real pity they have moved away from that as it represented good, simple value.

Have decided to go 100% Telecom and put the secondary like on TotalHome + Pro upgrade $130 monthly.
Shame about the 12 month Telecom contract though, the "no contracts" is where Orcon still really excels.

Very disappointed that Orcon have chosen to sting LLU customers with a 100% increase in charges on additional usage, given the trying times that many businesses are experiencing, increasing to $1.50/GB over might seem reasonable, but $2.00/GB - that is that same as rate connected via Telecom wholesale. Aside from the lack of contract (a big plus, shows a robust attitude to service delivered, if it is good then customers are retained), this leaves no useful point of difference between Orcon and anyone else. Yes, Orcon have offered a data pack (10GB for $12) that might work for some, but when own usage can be anywhere between 2GB and 20GB, fixed added charges are not a Good Thing (TM).
And, funny little bit to tag on this comment, I bought a Linksys WAG200G not long after getting Orcon LLU connection, was fine for 3 months then started dropping PPP when worked hard, mucho to-and-fro with Orcon support, eventually got ^&&*%$$ed off with it and passed it on to relatives that are connected to Orcon via Telecom Wholesale in the provinces, has been working great for them - no long distance support calls :)
So, after some time, I'm still not totally sold on the integrity of the Orcon LLU network, and now more $$$ are required. Need another ISP that will stand on it's own merits and not insist on a fixed contract. Any takers?
Duncan and team at Orcon, are you reading this, any comment to make?

I am just wondering if this is in writing on the Orcon website anywhere? And if so when does this come into play because I am on Orcon LLU and have not herd anything about this officially

So, just incase you've missed it.

This is called a "Bait and Switch".

Basically how it works is this:

Orcon baits a whole bunch of users over to their network with cheap prices. And then when they have enough users on their network they switch the pricing back to being expensive.

This is just not cool. It's a dirty tactic.

I've been a customer for about 5 years... and I'm off.

To compound things... last year they forced me to upgrade to the more expensive Orcon+ network and now there isn't an easy way to get off the Orcon+ network because there aren't any transfer agreements with other ISPs.

I'm not overly happy about it, but not much you can do. Orcon's performance has been a lot better than Xnet which I used to be on.

It'd be really nice if they made national traffic cheaper/free rather than limiting their "O Zone" to a few sites.

The O Zone seems pretty pathetic right now. Biggie is listed as one of the sites??? I don't know how much traffic I'm going to save on that one. TVNZ is good.

BTW go to http://biggie.co.nz now if you haven't (it's a friends site) hahaha.

So in the US this is a debate that has been going on for years. Search for Net Neutrality if you aren't up with it.

So it would seem that in NZ not only do we put up with poor ISP service, pricing and plans, but it's totally fine for ISPs to partner with content providers to provide a non-level playing field.

For e.g. TVNZ on demand will get many more people viewing their content, because it's free to the user. But TV3 may be left out in the cold because it didn't partner with Orcon.

The whole point of having an ISP is for them to provide the Internet (with a capital I) there is one and it's not a matter of choosing which Internet to connect to - a bundle of sites that you can access faster/cheaper. What happened to the old Internet.
