I'm on the old Pro 15GB max/max plan and up until 6 days ago I could get similar speedtests as w2k, and that was around the clock.

Since the 11th my pings been dreadful and upload speeds gone wonky...

Other then that I had no problems getting high download, reasonably low ping on an old plan.

Speedtest.net is a pointless exercise.

Realistic Orcon speeds with ADSL2 on the Platinum Home+ package are ~70kb/s to somewhere like YouTube. I occasionally see download speeds in the range 3-400kb/s but that's only in very off peak hours. Most of the time on YouTube for example, I cant watch the videos without pausing them to allow download to catch up which is pathetic.

For instance right now, according to Speedtest:

Don't make me snort my coffee over the monitor, the number of times I have seen download speeds of 1mb/s can be counted on the fingers of a mutilated hand.

Orcon don't buy enough international bandwidth to service a community of ADSL2 users. Same old story of overselling.

There is little benefit in ADSL2 and no discernible improvement over ADSL1 to all international sites. ADSL2 is only of use when visiting sites in NZ. For me that is pretty much exclusively using the VPN into the office...

Maybe. I've only stayed with Orcon because their excess data rate was $1/GB. But I don't even have that excuse anymore. So it's definitely time for a change. Disappointing, but there are alternatives out there.

rdjacobs: Maybe its time for a petition and to speak to our good friend Brook Howard Smith from target or our other good friends in the Media and TVNZ and see if we can get some explanations as to why we arn't getting what we pay for.

... or you could save yourself the time and hassle and swap to a different ISP.

A variety.  We use Xtra and WorldxChange at work, I use Snap at home.

Recently switched to Orcon (less than 2 weeks ago), its been average at best most of the time, but tonight has been the worst in recent history!

International download speeds are not to be desired, in steam games pings to Aus are about 130ms (was 60-80 on Telecom) and getting around 5 loss constantly, to all aus servers (gamearena, internode, dgaming), and only about two or three packet loss to NZ servers (which is really something to get excited about! Not!)

I will be changing back to Telecom asap (without paying the disconnection fee, frankly Orcon should be refunding me for such poor service), either that or immigrate to North Korea or Southern Yemen, I hear they definitly have better internet providers than what Orcon can manage!

And here we are some weeks down the track from when this post first started and have we progressed well frankly the answer to that question is an emphatic NO we have not speeds are still as slow as driving a front wheel drive car through mud upto the windows if you go outside NZ, national internet traffic seems to be ok for now

well i was going to put up a speedtest.net result for LA but the upload test failed and the download was a paltry 0.45Mbps pings weren't to bad though at 150ms

come orcon whats the problem
