Wow.  Same download speed as to my local server.

Monday 10 AM - still just as fast.  This can't just be more bandwidth as the latency is way down as well.  Sounddude, what's changed?

Same for me: lower pings, increased speed. I'm connected to the Takapuna exchange. I had good speeds anyway but it's even better now. Good stuff, and please make sure it stays that way!!

Just ran the test again (4:30 PM).  Will check again tonight to see if the evening peak slows it down.

If your peak results are significantly better than the ones above, then Orcon has some explaining to do.  I haven't done any off-peak tests in awhile, but I would be very surprised if results around 7 Mbps are in fact accurate... speedtest.net has poor accuracy at the best of times.  I suggest you validate your off-peak results with a download manager or tool like wget.  For example:

$ wget http://208.85.242.69/speedtest/speedtest/random2500x2500.jpg
--2009-06-15 19:21:08--  http://208.85.242.69/speedtest/speedtest/random2500x2500.jpg
Connecting to 208.85.242.69:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 12407926 (12M) [image/jpeg]
Saving to: `random2500x2500.jpg'

100%[============================================================================================================================>] 12,407,926   258K/s   in 57s

2009-06-15 19:22:08 (212 KB/s) - `random2500x2500.jpg' saved [12407926/12407926]

The reality is that Orcon international performance is still very poor (at least during peak hours if not during the whole day)... but if people want to provide accurate results that suggest otherwise, I'd love to see Orcon explain the disparity.

Orcon+ or Telecom wholesale?

Telecom wholesale... and yes, I understand that the backhaul is provisioned differently (at least according to a blog post made by Thomas Salmen last year), but if you're going to tell me that Orcon+ customers are afforded more international bandwidth proportionally, then I won't be impressed. And in case you're wondering if it's backhaul congestion, it isn't... my domestic and Aus results are in the mid to high teens.

Missed the evening peak, but this is still pretty good for 11:30 at night compared to what I've seen in the past.

Is Orcon spending the new excess download charges on more international bandwidth? Wink

w2krules: Is Orcon spending the new excess download charges on more international bandwidth? Wink

If they are (and they have claimed to have done so twice in recent times), it's evidently of benefit to only a subset of their customers, yourself included... and most other accounts of Orcon's international performance that I have seen on this forum and others in recent times point to that subset being a minority.

So what's going on, Orcon? Assuming w2krules' results accurately reflect his NZ - US performance, is international bandwidth allocated differently for w2krules than it is for me (and many others)? I'm still on the old Orcon Pro 15 GB plan for what it's worth, although I would hope that all residential customers (except perhaps Zeroshock customers if there still are any) are in the same pool as far as international bandwidth goes.
