I was also cabinetized. Went from 4Mbit/s down to ~1Mbit/s. Now I'm on UBS at 20Mbit/s. Thanks Orcon :)

I was moved to the cabinet in a few days, still on my Home+ plan and now I am getting 14.4Mbps Cool

Thats very generous of them, well done Orcon.

Lets make it very clear, if you are connected via a cabinet when on Telecoms network and concider moving to either Vodafone Red or Orcon+ (ie ULL connection) then dont. You can still obtain a UBS connection from both those providers using the cabinet and retain higher connection speeds due to the advantage of a shorter tail length.

There is no tangible disadvantage to staying with a UBS connection (ie via Telecom) other than the fact that Voda or Orcon may have smaller backhaul to the Telecom interchange than they provide to their own DSLAMs in each exchange. However in the main centre areas where the Red network or Orcon+ exist I would suggest both those providers have plenty of bandwidth to the Telecom interchange, might be different in the wops but there you have little choice.

Cyril can you please elaborate on the shorter tail lengh?

That's actually what I'm trying to estabilish from my previous posts, whether people on LLU connection are indeed connected to the exchange further away?

(by moving customers onto telecom's cabinet whilest keeping them on Orcon+ sounds like hemorhage cash on orcon's side, as the traffic cost been charged to orcon from telecom will exceed that $2/GB orcon set out)

Hi, tail length means the cable length from the DSLAM port to your modem. The whole purpose of cabnetisation (aka FTTN) is to move the DSLAM further out into the steets to reduce the cable or tail length.

FTTN (node) has been deployed by pretty much every Telco on the planet to help raise broadband connection speeds. There are two advantages to cabnetisation, firstly the tail length is reduced, this allows Telecom to meet its Guvment requested BB obligation of ensuring 80% of the populous can get broadband connection speeds of 10Mb/s or greater, the second is that it has meant the Telecom has now/soon deployed a FTTN network that has aggregation capacity between any DSLAM(Exchange or Cabinet housed) and Interchange point that exceeds the above requirement at potentially very good contention ratios.

yes such a shame it's going to take years for them to do it though when really there is no reason each city/town could be done all at once or is it more profitable to make us wait till October 2010

I disagree, once they started Chorus have been rolling out cabinets are a pretty cracking pace they are actually ahead of their planned schedule last time I checked.

I agree Ragnor, they are running a pretty tight schedule and seem to be ahead of it. I dont think I have ever seen the level of activity that the current work is running at in all my 30yrs of involvement in the Telecom/Broadcast industry, it should be applauded rather than slated.

There is not enough Chorus/Transfield/Downers/Whoever resources in the country to pull that off!

They are rolling them out at a pretty good rate as it is.

They are rolling them out at a pretty good rate as it is.

It will be interesting to see if the roll-out continues at the current speed with Ozzy owners taking over allot of the old Downers/ Transfield work and maybe no staff..
