Of course I would hope my friend went with 2degrees but he is currently contracted.
I know that you could buy this number on prepay and then port but question is can you port it tian existing contract with another provider?
The next set of Trademe numbers are going up on Sunday. They are previewing on the site now... calling all Matthews, Melissas (sorry no Magu :-) ) and it will be interesting to see just how lucky 022 888 8888 is here in NZ. If you're after an 022 number and your number is not on Trademe then (I know I've mentioned it before..) all you'll need is a 2degrees SIM card and from launch you'll be able to go online and choose a new number that is a little bit more 'u'.

I know many businesses that would pay up to several thousand for a good telephone number. In Oz, some companies will pay up to $50,000 for a good 1800, 1300 or 13 number.
I'm sure there are plenty of mobile-orientated companies out there that are interested. And at least the money is going to a good charity!
