I'd hate to point out the obvious but have you considered that 2degrees simply don't care about the $10 per month users who would simply lose them money? These types of customers are unprofitable.
Not every user out there sends hundreds or thousands of SMS's per month. Many want cheaper voice calling and this is the market they have targetted.
This. I currently send approximately 0 txts/month and make approximately 0 mins of calls/month, so 2degrees is perfect for my extremely light usage.
They could even offer 5c text messages and still profit.
At the end of the day, 2D will write XT a cheque for the texts sent to their network and XT will write a cheque back to 2D for about the same, so it all evens out
The 5c they charged you at the start is their profit after all the fees are paid to one and other.
Sure if 2d users texted XT 1,000,000 times and XT users didn't text 2d at all, then 2d will be outof pocket, but that simply won't happen. It all balances out.

Exactly. Finally someone offering more realisitic pricing to low volume users.
* I sent 17 txts last month. Thats $3.40, under 2degrees it would be $1.53, less than half price. Anyone who send less than 67 txts a month will be better off (67*$.09=$6.03), plus they'll get a months free txts every time top up time comes around again. * Per minute versus per second pricing is a moot point for me, since the per second brigade still charge for the first full minute and most calls I make last less than 60 seconds. Therefore 44c is far cheaper than 89c. In fact you'll only be paying for 1 part minute per call no matter what what the length, and since 44c is less than half of 89c the 89c rate could never be cheaper, no matter how many calls you make 1second makes no difference. Proof: 89c @61seconds times ten calls = (.89+(.89/60))*10 = $9.05 (2DP) 44c @61seconds times ten calls = (.44+.44)*10 = $8.80 (no need to round) 89c @61seconds times one thousand calls = (.89+(.89/60))*1000 = $904.83 (2DP) 44c @61seconds times one thousand calls = (.44+.44)*1000 = $880 (no need to round)
