simon14: There is a simple reason why 2degrees hasn't offered a Bestmates/Favourites offer....

They don't have their own entire network!!

If they charged you $6 to add a number on 2degrees to call as much as you wanted and you called them for hours while roaming on Vodafones network, 2degrees would obviously be charged by Vodafone a per minute rate which means they couldn't offer unlimited calling for a fixed price.

If 2degrees had their very own nation wide network (like telecom and vodafone) then they could easily offer a bestmate service, but they don't and they have to pay per minute while roaming, so this just isn't possible.

That's easily one of the most logical deductions I've heard all day! Well done sir.

I don't think that this is an essential feature at the moment. I'm currently spending about $45/month with Telecom, including two $6 extras. I calculated this month's usage (voice, text and data) on 2 degrees and it came to $17.30, not counting any magic topups. It'll be interesting for all of you to calculate your actual costs and see whether it does come out more expensive or not.

i.e. how many txts, data, calls, what plan you are on with Telecom etc.

Well, since you're all so curious :)

I'm on One Rate 50, ie. the cheapest one. I have the $6 text and data packs, but no favourites (I'm not a heavy caller so the 50 included minutes are sufficient).

Looking back at my previous post, I think it was a bit silly of me to say that favourites are not essential; while they're not great for me, some of you presumably call a lot more often that I do!

I don't have the breakdown in front of me (I did it at work and don't really want to add up all my calls and texts again) but now that I've stopped to think about it, I've realised that my needs are probably atypical: A relatively high percentage of international usage.

What do you mean by "international usage"? Calls/TXTs from NZ or roaming?

Because the 9c TXT to 21 countries is genius.

Texts, and some calls, from NZ to the US. I'm heading over there in a fortnight so I'll be making use of the roaming too.

My intention was to change to Telecom prepaid when I get back (no US roaming on XT prepaid), but I'll certainly investigate whether 2 degrees is a better choice since I believe that I can keep my existing phone.

You should be able to use any phone that is connected to XT, on 2 degrees yes.

Certain usage patterns will be cheaper on XT compared to 2 degrees, but if you were happy with One Rate 50 and your usage pattern is what you described above, then yes you would clearly benefit from 2 degrees.

The outbound international calling/txting would certianly make 2d be a lot cheaper.

International calling and texting aside, in terms of just looking at XT plans, you probably aren’t on the most efficient plan right now.

You have the one rate 50 plan, but that is not necessarily the cheapest if you are using nowhere near the full amount of 50 minutes. You would probably be better on prepay XT than post pay to take advantage of the bonus top ups. Or maybe the Combo plan, which is $15 and includes 20 mins.

You have the $6 data pack, which gives you 20MB, but clearly using nowhere near that amount (data on 2D is expensive 50c/MB, if you used your allowance then you would be paying 2D $10/month for that)

$1/day casual data would probably be better for you.

You presumably also use nowhere near your allocation of 150 TXTs either, since that would be $13.50 just for TXTs on 2D if you did.

That aside, if you are making quite a few international calls and TXTs, and relatively few national calls and TXTs then 2D is almost certainly better for you.

Remeber thought that roaming on 2D is quite a bit more expensive than on XT or Voda, and they only have a few roaming destinations currently, so if you are headed anywhere a little odd then a 2D phone won't work at all.
