This was one of the great hidden charges in the release of (not-so) Supa Prepay!
It was smoke and mirrors really. Vodafone teased us with this "best mate" concept, which wasn't explained until launch. Then when it launched and people saw they could get Best Mates and TXT2000 on-net, most people ignored the fine print:
1. 89c/min flat rate, the same as the previous VF "flat rate" pricing option, but charged on a per minute basis 2. 90 day top-up expiry, later revised to 365 days due to customer feedback/moaning (?)
If you are still on "Nights and Weekends", "MotorMouth", or the old "flat rate 89c/min" plan, then you are unaffected. Legacy plans still charge per second (which was one of the early promoted features of Vodafone over Telecom wasn't it?? Ironic!). If you were on an older Prepay plan and did not switch plans, you were not forced over to Supa Prepay.
Huh? I didn't know they could force you over like that?? This is getting off-topic but I always thought you could just buy a replacement SIM for lost SIMs, retaining the same plan details and stuff. Sounds like you would do far better on 2 Degrees unless you need data. Although I'm sure you knew that given how much you know about pricing :)
Well, 3 weeks in and still no open discussion on the data/txt/fav's questions...
I suppose i am one of the lucky ones in as much as i received my sim card the day before official launch, i managed to activate it and then change my number before Jeff had a meltdown, called customer service a couple of times with prompt precise and friendly replies. All in all a great start...
The problem is here we all were waiting for the big telco shake up virtually promised by 2D yet the two bigboys have figured out the added benefit of the add-ons is sufficient to retain existing business so 'status quo do your worst 2D' and we the consumer are left straddling 2 or 3 providers to get a usable mobile solution.
If anything 2D coming onto the market seems to have only flared up the old VF trying to lure telecom customers and vice versa battle with big credits to switch provider. it almost seems like 2D is no threat to their business model whatsoever?
I wouldn't be surprised if 2d ends up putting even cheaper calling and texting to 2d mobiles to help capture more people. Texting would be really easy for them to make free or <1c/text to 2d mobiles, as it costs them practically nothing.
As it stands now, I'm happy, I used to spend about $9-12 a month on prepaid (about half calls/half texts), with the 100 free texts and 22c/min to landlines, my balance is $19 (20+5 to begin with) even though I use my phone lots more! :D

While it may seem like a long time - 2degrees has only been in the market for 3 weeks. You've read it and quoted it before: "this is a marathon, not a sprint". We have plenty more interesting things for our customers in the pipeline, but we will not be discussing them until we are ready to. We certainly don't want to give the 'others' any indication of what we are up to... where would the competitive advantage be in that? One thing you'll notice about what we come up with next is that 2degrees is not about copying the status quo, 2degrees is about reinventing mobile and our core focus will always be about delivering better value to our customers.

Perhaps your could post details of their staffing costs, maintenance schedule, and other costs, in order to justify your insane proposal of free / <1c txts. Considering that it will be one of their main income streams, I would be interested to know how they could slash it by 90% and make a profit.

And I thought I was a cynic. Way to read a generally positive post about 2degrees as somehow insinuating that texts must be free and teleco's aren't allowed to make money. Whilst his suggestion may not make sense to you I don't think you need to rip into him like that.
Also it costs them when they have customers roaming onto vodafone outside the main centers. Was that a smart business decision to allow for that? I have no idea. I will never roam onto vodafone with my 2 degrees so really if it was a choice between the roaming or cheaper on net calls, I would want the latter.

I do my best to keep Vfone out of the equation when using 2 degrees here in Wgton. Most people I call are existing 2 degrees customers living also in Wellington. The quicker 2 degrees is able to roll out a nationwide network the better off they will be.
