Niel: Not sure why billing is an issue with banks. Whenever I make an internet banking payment over $500 ASB sends me a TXT with a code (called Net Code) to confirm it is me doing the payment. It cost me nothing.

You might have different arrangements, but Netcode costs me $0.25 per transfer/sms. This is charged to the bank account, not phone account.

Ah, I'm actually with Sovereign which uses ASB so there are no service fees.  Also with ASB where I don;t pay service fees because of a large (2nd) mortgage.  Now it makes sense, thanks.

We operate a TXT Short code system where you can join and operate your own short code for free: www.youtxt.co.nz. We had to apply to 2Degrees and pay the setup fees to get our short code 8808 recognised. It is set up and working now, and they were quite quick. All other shortcode owners around the country will have to do the same thing.

Cheers, G

mp1: I presume when I port my number over it won't matter, but its a bit odd I thought that NZ's largest bank won't allow txtBanking from 022 phones!

At the moment it doesnt look like you can do text banking to any bank even with a ported number as I am with Kiwibank I ported my 021 number to 2D just tried to text BAL to 5494 and havent had a reply. It will be interesting to see if I get an alert tomorrow morning to acknowledge the deposit I did this morning. If I do get that alert then it will say that you cant send texts to your bank through 2D at the moment.

So you are paying Vodafone, Telecom, and 2Degrees all for the privledge of being able to send from/to them via a shortcode? Where they all (if you can say) similar contracts/costs?

Yes we pay them all, and they are all similar costs (setup, monthly fees, and they clip the tickets on the txt's by similar amounts). I think it is called price fixing in other markets.

Give KB a call in the morning and double check what's up.  I work there and as far as I'm aware the 2D numbers as well as those ported are sorted now.  I know it sounds bad a CSR not knowing, but I haven't been at work for a few days and only got the email on my most recent shift :-)

Just updating here I did receive a text this morning acknowledging the deposit I did yesterday so it doesnt look like you can text 5494 for text banking KB on 2 degrees. I have tried to text twice now and havent received a text back.

Hey Geekzoners!

We're investigating this and will get back to you once we know what the issue is and we've sorted it.

Cheers!

Good thanks 2degrees when I logged into your 2degrees I noticed I got charged 20c for trying to text my Kiwibank account so look forward to your confirmation that we can do so.

Updating here. Just sent Bal to 5494 today and text went through and got a reply with the balance in my account.

I've noticed TradeMe now accepts 022 numbers in your profile.

Net Code (used by ASB, and by mortgages using ASB accounts) allows 022 numbers, and apparently had some issues which should be sorted by now. Was nice chatting with a South African customer services lady, very friendly/helpful.

ASB does not allow 022 in your on-line banking profile yet, but perhaps the web site is just lagging behind Net Code registration (which is done with a call, not via the web site).

Slowly but surely companies are connecting up with 2Degrees...
