Well I recently changed to 2degrees, and as i'm unable to port my 021 number over I rang ANZ to change my mobile phone number for text banking to my 022 number. They said that 022 isn't a valid phone number prefix and that only 021/7/8/9 etc can use TXT banking.

I presume when I port my number over it won't matter, but its a bit odd I thought that NZ's largest bank won't allow txtBanking from 022 phones!

They wouldn't accept 022 but they would accept 028?

Yep. They'd accept 028. I'm fairly certain the CSR was NZ based, and she hadn't even heard of 2degrees. Odd!

:o

Get one of those free-divert 2talk 028 numbers :p

Seriously though... I guess it'll take some time for the prefix to be fully recognized. Some people even still look at me funny if I give out my 029 number.

Its for SMS banking though - so you text BAL to 880 when your out and about and for $0.20c ANZ txt back your balance (saves finding an ATM etc at times).

I've fiddled with the 028 numbers with 2talk and their softphone, have never been able to get the SMS working (off-topic I know. . . ).

That's ANZ for you. For al most 12 months I tried to explain to them with on-line banking at the start of a credit card cycle if there are no transactions for that cycle yet then you can not view any statements. Eventually they started fixing it, but it took a lot of e-mails explaining the problem.

There is a good chance the help desk is actually in AU, being a major AU bank (as far as I know).

A side note: 028 is not just 2talk, I believe Black + White use a block of 028 for their mobile service.

And B+W should be even less recognized than 2degrees Tongue out

There are actually about 7 or 8 companies with 028 ranges, mostly not yet in use.

Just checked with ASB and they are not sending on 022 either. They blame 2 degrees.

You know, this is probably more to do with the fact that ANZ/ASB/Trademe/whoever actually have to set up a billing arrangement with 2degrees to get their short code enabled on their network. It's not just that they don't recognise it, just that they can't bill you on it.

Yeah, short codes are network dependant, and when they started some where network specific, Most are now across both T/com and Vfone,
but I guess it will take a while for all the other networks to get billing arrangements set up.

Not sure why billing is an issue with banks. Whenever I make an internet banking payment over $500 ASB sends me a TXT with a code (called Net Code) to confirm it is me doing the payment. It cost me nothing, they do not bill me for it. It is simply ASB sends an SMS charged to their own account by a 3rd party. Can't do this on 2D.

There are other services like Trade Me charges you when they send you an SMS.

I'm under the impression that the drop-down list for the prefix is simply to ensure you enter a mobile number and not a land line or overseas mobile number.

Niel, to setup the short code, they still need to enter into arrangements with the mobile providers.

But I can have an 021 number on 2D (after porting) and the bank will accept it (I assume). I'm sure there is a reason for it, just that it is outdated after number porting was allowed. Just my thoughts, does not really need to understand it so let's push the banks etc. to get the agreements sorted so their customers can continue using their services. Just need it sorted.
