You can download at full speed with megaupload, rapidshare and the others after about 2am until about 8am.
For the rest of the time it will be traffic managed to some degree.
torrents run at full speed after 1am till 9am.

Downloading at peak times is OK for small files but does not work for big ones.

If you downloading from some random site they don't know about they don't seem to throttle it

I have a cap of 100GB which I completely use every month so I have had to learn to live with the traffic management system.
Telecom is not an option for me since they think 40GB is the most anyone would download.

I find web pages load quickly but youtube is unusable most of the time.

The other problem is skype does not work properly. The "robotic voice" problem occurs which apparently is a network problem so I guess they kill that as well.
This is a pity as it uses very little bandwidth.

The bottom line is that the southern cross cable costs them too much and that is reflected in the service we get.

The reason why we have "bad internet" is because of local loop unbundling.

LLU is only a short term solution. We got cheaper, better, faster internet as Orcon lost $3.6 million last year trying to increase its customer database. Orcon can't keep losing money like this - either the prices will have to go up or the service has to decrease (ie reduce expenses).

Only a big company with a profitable incentive is going to put up the capital for a better infrastructure. A monopoly is a "profitable incentive". (You can't get red hotels in the game Monopoly without first buying the green houses) Better infrastructure = more efficiency = reduce cost = better internet!

Bottom line is "government regulation" is why we have poor service.

Oh so thats why ive noticed my RS and MU speeds come to a complete halt or downloads at 4-5kb/s. And this just happened 2 days ago. My speeds with Orcon has always been good, i get 650-700kb/s from 2am till 6pm. Even viewing youtube vids is a breeze 99.5% (even during peak hours. All in all i really cant complain (YET).

The 8mb file that I really need has been downloading now for nearly 30 minutes. How is this ment to be practical?

With traffic shaping it is a game of rob Rapidshare to pay Youtube, and the thousands of other options, which means they will never get it right, buy international bandwidth, buy caching or maybe the ultimate plan is a CDN where all content is hosted in NZ, it only money.

Have you somehow managed to miss BigTime, or do you just not consider it an option. A friend of mine has hit 400GB this month on it...

Hmm interesting. Things are rocketing it this morning. Added some downloads and was getting nearly 800kb/s. So not sure if that was just a problem or no one is online right now!

Every ISP will have rocket performance at 11:32, the time to test the good the bad and the ugly is between 4 pm and 11 pm. Its like the Auckland motorway, fantastic at 3 am. I am a Bigtime user and between 4pm and 11 pm I rate Bigtime as the ugly, the hot youtubes are OK but all the rest is not.

You see must speeds with RS and MU use to be between 100-200kb/s from 6pm till 2am (which is totally fine with me) and then from 2am till 6pm it was full on speed. Since wednesday it has gotten so bad its not even funny. I still get full speed in the early hours of the morning till say 1pm then its a complete mess.

If this gets on my nerves any more then it already does im seriously thinking of packing up and moving ISP, nice going Orcon. This is actually the first time online that i have complained about Orcon since i have been with them for years. The question now is what other ISP is good out there?

Wow traffic is SO SLOW, I cannot even get to rapidshare.com or megaupload.com!

Seriously cannot even accesss these sites :( Sucks

So it looks like Orcon has taken the bandwidth from rapidshare and megaupload and made it available to those browsing Youtube! :(

Maybe on Monday Orcon can traffic shape for Youtube, Tuesday Rapidshare, Wednesday something else, etc. As for a better ISP I hear good things about Vodafone, and looking at the lack of comments about performance I am thinking there maybe something here.

xpd: Its a fact of online life - every ISP shapes their bandwidth. If you can find an ISP that does NO shaping AT ALL then Id be very surprised.

Personally, Im on Orcon and have no problems with their system, 300k+ on "Linux ISO's" - Im happy. Beats the 3k I was getting from my previous ISP.

never had a problem with Snap , torrent and dowmload speed is constant 24 hours maybe why they were voted best isp in NZ

gah! this is terrible.

A couple of weeks ago when this started happening i thought to myself "yeah, i can get over this, i'll survive being able to download during off peak times and not have the service i signed up for, at the times i really want to use it"

But now!, sheesh, i can't even get a file to download completely using a multi part manager at any time of the day, it'll either time out or corrupt itself so needs to be re-downloaded. It doesn't happen to all files, but i'd say about 75% of them will need to be re-acquired.

And to top it all off the rest of my internet performance is diabolical now, i've gone from perfectly happy to very disappointed in the space of a few weeks.

I'll stick with them for now as they've been good to me in the past, but i'm not going to pay top dollar for sub par service for very long sorry chaps.
