Anybody who is thinking of joing Orcon to download Rapidshare or Megaupload content should be warned. Orcon filters and manipulates the download capacity to these websites - particularly at peck times. Download speeds are very limited and at times access to these websites are often completely removed.

The only way around this is to use a proxy server. Good (fast) proxies can be expensive.

Don't be fooled by large, cheap download rates by Orcon.

If you're a serious rapidshare user your better off paying more and use Telecom Xtra instead.

Oh that kinda sucks. I've just signed up for Orcon. Not a huge user of those sites but like to download the occasional thing from there. Seems kind of unfair them deciding you're service should be compromised because of the sites you're data is coming from. Why exactly do they do it?
I'm not s huge user of such sites but when I do want something from there I would like to know that I'm getting the full service I pay for.

There is defianantly some truth to this post. About 6 months ago downloads from rapidshare etc where all fine, I was getting 500kbps at all times of the day. Then suddenly one day it changed. Nothing has happend to my connection speed, but rapidshare download speeds are 100kbps in the morning and 1kbps at night, yes 1kbps!

Its blatant throttling. What is worse is that telecom only throttle users on their cheapest plans but not Orcon! Oh no, I pay for the most expensive internet plan but get treated like a user on a dirty unlimited data usage plan.

As for the rerouting, I wouldnt be surprised if this was true, but I cbf paying the costs to try it out, instead cheaper just to change isp.

ISP throttle and shape certain types of traffic and sites due to them being a 'Large' bandwidth source, e.g MOST (and I say most not all) use the likes of rapid share and torrents to distribute illegal files which use a lot of the networks bandwidth hence slowing it down for other users.

But I do say not all, as I do on occasion get a linux distro update or 2 from bit torrent and find it annoying at the speed but its something I guess everybody has to learn to live with as its not going away

All seems a bit dodgy and murky to me. I mean 1 kbps is ridiculous. Why is that traffic less important than somebody else who's downlaoding via another source. Makes no sense to me. If you're paying for data, you should get you're data, no matter where it's from. I guess it's some sort of cost cutting mechanism? All over my head why they need to do it at all.

Look this is honestly infuriating.

Orcon is p!ss!ng me the fjck off.

Why do i pay the same price per gig, and yet receive a neutered product, *JUST* because of the site my data is coming from ?

It is also not in the T&C as i pointed out to a tech I have been complaining to about it.

Its wrong.

If they are going to throttle rapidshare traffic, it ought to be cheaper, at least.

It is not their business what site my data is coming from. its my data. they have my money. where is my speed ?

Its a fact of online life - every ISP shapes their bandwidth. If you can find an ISP that does NO shaping AT ALL then Id be very surprised.

Personally, Im on Orcon and have no problems with their system, 300k+ on "Linux ISO's" - Im happy. Beats the 3k I was getting from my previous ISP.

Orxcon have never denied they traffic shape. They have made it very clear in the past and have never hidden this.

There are some details here if you're interested in reading exactly what hardware they're using.

Rapidshare and Megaupload in the past were treated as normal international http traffic. It's only recently (ie. last few months) that it has been directly targeted by Orcon and as a result the download capacity of these sites are now being reduced significantly. Other less popular "one-click hosting" sites are not affected.

The title of the thread is rather miss leading. It should have read "Orcon is now traffic shaping Rapidshare".

Would you guys be able to provide an example URL of where you consistent shaping from Orcon ?

I know that when I use Rapidshare to download stuff I make sure to carefully choose which mirror i'm downloading from. If the mirror I get isn't giving me the best speed then I cancel it and move on to the next.

As long as it's not lagging out my wow connection I couldn't give 2 hoots about how fast it gets downloaded.

I've been with many ISPs and absolutely think I'm with NZ's best - Orcon!

Yes, just in the last day or so, it's gotten slower. Last night I got the 1kBps download speeds. However, youtube is now considerably faster.

I completely understand where Orcon is coming from, and 99% agree with their shaping policy.
Occasionally I want something *right now*, and don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a daily limit during peak time.

I'd like to have a 1GB/d (or even 500MB/d) limit on on rapidshare/megaupload/etc during peak times. Once the limit is hit, a rate of 1kBps should be expected until peak time is over.

Orcon is BACK!!
I was getting ready to leave, but did my regular speed tests and http downloads tonight (after reading this thread) ... and wow!
Getting my full 4.5Mbit a second download speed on NZ Speedtests and just a bit slower on International. Http downloads from Youtube, Apple, Winamp and VLC mirrors are all performing excellently and You Tube videos are now not buffering every 3 seconds.

HOWEVER, Megaupload is currently downloading at 1.4kb/second meaning the 200MB file I want to download is going to take just over 55hrs to download.

I need to test my Usenet downloads as well (since I dont torrent)
EDIT: Newsgroups/Usenet seem to be shapped as well. Was getting 190kb/sec but it would spike and then die, spike and die rather than a constant 500kb/sec. Might need to try another port as my provider has a few to choose from

I'm so very glad I paid to upgrade my plan to a "fullspeed" one.

I'm not using rapidshare or torrenting. I'd just like to be able to load up the odd webpage without having to make a cup of tea whilst I wait. I might download a copy of Lynx - I wonder if I can still use gopher?

I'm reduced to calling each night and asking how's it going?

I got the same reply last night when I asked about my slow ticket and any updates since I was told I would have an email on Monday.

Currently on hold with Orcon to thank them for whatever they have done and cancel my slow ticket notice as I do not wish to pay for a tech to visit. However I need them to make a note in my account that any future slow speed issues are not a result of any issues at my end, it is something at there end .. (I can dream right)
