Yes. However rapidshare/megaupload should only be shaped during peak times. They are high usage sites. We have told our shaper to prioritise gaming and youtube etc. (realtime applications) over P2P/Rapid share etc.

We feel that youtube buffering/gaming packet loss/lag is unacceptable.

Are you going to look at providing more bandwidth to these shaped sites during peak times? Don't mind it being shaped but getting ~ 2-4k/s or not even being able to load the sites is a bit crazy!

Yes I agree.

Recently we have had to load balance our international capacity over 1Gig links, which is quite hard and very easy to get wrong. Last night we cutover to our 10Gig links to our upstreams, which will allow us to add bandwidth easily.

I am currently writing an Orcon blog about what upgrades we recently peformed, as we have done some big infrastructure work recently to improve our performance.

Sometimes I just want to download 350MB from Rapidshare during peak times and I wont use any more for the remainder of the day.
I wish there were a way of allowing a "reasonable" on-peak amount per day.

While I feel that Orcon are being reasonable in restricting leechers during on-peak, I feel we've demoted Rapidshare too much. The 350MB file simply wont download on-peak. Additionally, I could even live with the file taking 2 hours to download, but currently it wont download at all.

I've been in touch with Orcon Support, and I've been given the impression my feedback will be read, so that's a positive. I shouldn't complain too much, I guess...

It is impossible for DPI products to be configured to give the level of granularity that Rvangelder has requested. What needs to be considered is a cache that will cache a broader range of content, not just YouTube or URL?s. It is in the interest of content providers to have their content cacheable, so with this in mind content from the likes of Rapidshare, and many others should be available for NZ based storage devices, this approach will improve Internet performance for many users.

No way its fixed, wait to peak time between 6pm and 11 pm, and all the problems will be back, Orcon will need to spend some real bucks to fix this, not just a blog.

My irc has been on all day since early this morning now just after 11pm not one disconnect at all seems fixed to me. previous days it would be disconnecting like crazy after 5pm, tonight it's been perfectly smooth and normal.

The last time i checked any cluster of decent caching devices such as Bluecoats or Peerapps with enough grunt to handle the kind of bandwidth requirements that Orcon would have wouldn't come cheap! I'd be suprised if they've come out with much change (if any at all,) from $500,000 , that's assuming that they have bought a bunch of caches which wouldnt suprice me as they will be using enough bandwidth now to really see a benifit from such devices.

irc connection still drops out.
funny though, out of the 3 servers i join most frequently, only the 2 gets disconnected while the other one's pretty rock solid.

thanks for looking into this guys.

PS. btw, did the dns server just died for like 2mins around 2:15am? was wondering if using opendns is a good solution..

Peerapp has plenty of larger customers then Orcon, I here they have one customer with over 16Gig of traffic going through, not sure on the Bluecoat situation I hear they still have software problems.

We had a issue with one of our core switches yesterday and we had to reboot it around 2am last night.
