CutCutCut: Just into my 2nd month with Orcon. I'min an Orcon+ area and the quickest I've manged to get is 6.5Mbps. Not really what I was expecting, I'm just over 2km from the exchange and from what I can gather I should be really getting about  double that. Haven't had much of a chance to try and get some answers as to the speed issues yet. Only time I've rang customer service I had to wait about 15mins. The no term plan really apealled to me though.

6.5MBPS?!?! thats crazy.

Although, in saying that, my connection rate is 17.5mbps, but my actual download speed has dropped to 4mbps.

its absolutely terrible.

EDIT: I'm also not saying 4mbps is terrible, im saying its terrible considering im PAYING for ADSL2+ service and getting sub-adsl.

So what was the deal with Orcon only advertising their Telecom Wholesale plans as 128k/FS instead of FS/FS ?
I would of thought all providers would of liked to get everyone on FS/FS to take the best advantage of ADSL2+? (unless they are wanting to save bandwidth)

Internet is a frustrating thing when it's not working well but the (relatively) small price you pay per month is for a best effort shared residential connection with no gaurantee of speed or service levels.  I'm not trying to stir you up but that's the reality.

On a residential plan the contention with other users could be anywhere from 50:1 to 100:1 (and that may be overly optimistic).

Real gauranteed dedicated bandwidth is actually way more expensive than you are paying, you want a dedicated 6Mbit connection (not shared with other users)... how about $5000 / month

I have had nothing but issues with Orcon over time. I live in parnell. My last serious complaint about speed (the adsl2+) was only resolved after i got on this blog
essentially it was a joke
today i tested, i was moved off adls  2 (back to normal adls) because it was causing issues. It took 10 lots of contact, phone, email etc and still nothing, in fact the did what ISP's always do, have their staff deny there was any problem and make it seem like you are the only one. Just plain lies.
recently my phone started breaking up after a minute, so had to resort to mobile phone (a bandwidth issue)
todays download 2mb local, 1mb la, .5mb new york and just .3mb in london hope that gives you an idea. Before they oversold their service , beyond their ability to provide bandwidth, i go over 4mb download here ... consistantly. They have steadily gotten worse. Don't believe the hype
hope that was informative, oh, and their engineers frequent this site and stick in favourable blogs...
thats orcon, only the con part is relevant
