As I am looking at changing internet providers, Orcon is on my shortlist?
How do current users rate them? (especially with speed on the FS/128 plans)

oh and don't get a 128k up. Get a FS/FS, as the 128k up will really limit what you get down.

Really? 128k up is enough for just over 9 mbit down under ideal conditions. (delayed acks, minimal threads, low latency etc)

Doesn't international bandwidth contention and traffic shaping have more of a _real world_ impact on download speeds, especially in peak hours? I'd say that unless a user could reliably expect to get better than 4-5mbit international during peak hours, the 128k up won't materially impact the DOWNLOAD speed.

That all said, I'd recommend the FS/FS as well, but not under the guise of the 128k up limiting the download speeds.

ps. Yes, national sites are likely to benefit from FS over 128, my general point stands though - there are thinner download bottlenecks on most ISPs than the 128k upstream.

The comment was more around National sites.

If you have a 20Mbit down sync and 128k up. You would only get 9Mbit down from a Peering connected site, which then = a customer complaint about speed vs Sync.

So my advice is yes, the 128k won't effect international sites, but national sites (assuming thats important to you) will be slowed down by having only 128k up speed.

So orcon are worth it... Using experience, how long would you estimate it to take to download a 35mb file off an ftp server from L.A. (or just the USA...)? (estimate...)

I've been on Orcon for years now and apart from the 9 months we were on LLU I've never had much problem. Currently back on UBS and alls well. I've found there help desk very good and it's local..

While I've had good experience with their Help Desk, I am in no way going to recommend their services. AT ALL.
I've been a customer of theirs for a little under a year, and I have to say. Their so called ADSL2+ service is a joke.

It's nice for local services (although, even that is pathetically slow now), but you try touching youtube, and for a 1:31 video, you will be waiting for at least 5-10MINUTES for it to buffer.

If you are only doing Emails and phone calls, Orcon is okay.

but if you want high speed internet for things such as youtube.. Look elsewhere.

EDIT: I am on the Orcon+ network.

crap speeds, crap customer service. Dont go there ~~

Last one took about 30 seconds just to get the download speed. Notice the high ping at the end which makes gaming unplayable :)

For a single user sure 128k is fine.... but it's very easy to saturate 128k upload when you have more than one person/computer at home using the net.

Upload is used for more than just ack packets eg: sending email, uploading photo's to facebook/flickr whatever.

Orcon is ok ive never really had problems with them. As i said a few times youtube loads 99% fine even during peak hours. I just wish i could get at least a 10mb connection and id be super happy forever (currently have 5mb)

Orcon was great for me, moved back into cable area so logged onto that and Orcon failed to disable the broadband and have now billed me!! Slowly trying to sort it with them trying to find the phone call!! Slow progress!! But apart from that, all was good!

Just into my 2nd month with Orcon. I'min an Orcon+ area and the quickest I've manged to get is 6.5Mbps. Not really what I was expecting, I'm just over 2km from the exchange and from what I can gather I should be really getting about double that. Haven't had much of a chance to try and get some answers as to the speed issues yet. Only time I've rang customer service I had to wait about 15mins. The no term plan really apealled to me though.
