Hm.. I dunno. I don't seem to have issues with torrents no matter what time of day. I usually use torrents to file share with a few of my mates and it works every time, no matter whether its during peak hours or not.

they definitly manage p2p at peak hours, but during off peaks I am able to get a decent speed out of it.
Have you open ports for the whatever p2p software you are using?

Oh yes of course they manage. But they said block which doesnt mean manage.

I actually get pretty decent speeds during peak hours too.

I think it depends entirely on what trackers you're using. Sometimes, manage may as well mean block.

Oh well thanks guys, I'll need to have a bit of a play around with some of these suggestions and get educated on exactly how these trackers work. And hopfeully I'll have some joy. But yeah big deifference between manage and block...

We don't block, however we do traffic manage. P2P traffic wil be shaped to ensure protocols like youtube, web downloads etc don't get degraded at peak times.

I wasn't judging, it seems fair to me. In my (admittedly limited) experience, some trackers are totally unavailable at certain times of the day. Maybe that's because the other stuff is getting hit hard and you need the bandwidth, I don't have a problem with that, just letting the OP know.

I on the other hand do have a problem with it. It is just messed up. Why should people streaming get priority when I am practically doing the same thing? And other downloaders get faster speeds because they are using a different protocol?

I just want to download an episode of Dexter to watch on Monday evening, but my download is being heavily managed, and everytime uTorrent tries to connect to the tracker I get the error: "connection closed by peer", continuously. It goes very slow during peak period and is terribly frustrating, a download that should take less than 10 minutes has now been going for 3 hours.

Would it not make more sense to only start restricting traffic once the user has downloaded a certain amount during the peak period? Say 1gb? That would still stop heavy load on the system from BIG downloads (not that I am condoning any form of traffic management, I just think the system sucks). I don't do big downloads at peak times, and don't plan to, which is besides the point. I should be able to do small ones at peak times regardless of protocol.

Seriously, what is the point in paying for bandwith that I can't choose how and when I use it? Answer: because it is the only way I be able to download. I want my downloads just like any other internet user, so will use it eventually, but ever so inconveniently. I am being discriminated against, and it is unfair and unreasonable.

Note: "connection closed by peer" is just f#$king lame, wtf Orcon. You are stopping me connecting to the site I want to. I know its you, because it worked earlier today. And I have been checking for weeks.

Also, get ADSL2+ working in Mairangi Bay, or take it off your map, since you are charging so much for sh^t broadband. Then, at least when I download off-peak I'll get my stuff faster.

And another thing, upgrade your infrastructure, traffic shaping is just a way of saving money and cutting corners, at the expense of your customer satisfaction. You are abusing your market position

Maybe I misinterpreted that? I was merely discussing the main product offered by Orcon. If can find a better place on the internet for me to air my concerns about this specific issue, please let me know.

Besides the issues outlined in my post I have no other problems with Orcon, and will probably stay with them. The problem with traffic management is it is not readily disclosed on their website and the process the ISP uses is very ambiguous.

Orcon traffic shapers don't force closure of connections. The only thing the shapers do is drop low priorty packets at peak time to ensure high priorty traffic gets the bandwidth it requires.

Also, get ADSL2+ working in Mairangi Bay, or take it off your map, since you are charging so much for sh^t broadband. Then, at least when I download off-peak I'll get my stuff faster.

All Orcons equipment is ADSL2+. You must be connected to Telecom resold equipment.

Real time traffic will always be or should always be prioritised over bulk downloads as your download slowing down is less annoying than someones VoIP conversation or Video stream not working.

As for your lack of ADSL2+ speeds, these are the reasons I've thought up so far..

* distance to exchange
* poor internal house wiring
* using an ADSL1 only modem
* using old firmware on said modem
* incorrect line profile setup on Telecom DSLAM

Also you can hardly complain about not being able to download essentially stolen content... you have no 'right' to have access to it.

I'd agree with that, to a certain extent. If something is being so heavily managed to the point where it effectively doesn't work, then that is at least equally annoying. Maybe ISPs need to find better shaping/prioritising solutions. If I have one 30mb file but am unable to download it becuase that particular site is heavily shaped for whatever reason, is it fair that another user streams 300mb in voip/video streaming when they're paying for the exact same plan/service?

Yeah well that's in theory at least, around a year ago Orcon released this rather informative article, I understand things have changed somewhat so perhaps a new article is being worked on.

I spoke to Orcon today and apparently, although my exchange and cabinet are upgraded to ADSL2+, they are still in negotiation with with Telecom about getting access to the cabinet themselves so can't move me to an Orcon+ plan. I am getting a new modem though because I should get still be able to get ADSL2+ speeds. This means they are charging me more for exactly the same service...

Earlier today I ran a test: "Glasnost: Test if your ISP is manipulating BitTorrent traffic" (http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=Glasnost:%20Test%20if%20your%20ISP%20is%20manipulating%20BitTorrent%20traffic)

Results:

Is BitTorrent traffic on a well-known BitTorrent port (6881) throttled?
The BitTorrent upload (seeding) worked. Our tool was successful in uploading data using the BitTorrent protocol.

There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP upload achieved at least 595 Kbps while a BitTorrent upload achieved at most 600 Kbps. You can find details here.

The BitTorrent download worked. Our tool was successful in downloading data using the BitTorrent protocol.

There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent downloads. In our tests a TCP download achieved at least 747 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved at most 869 Kbps. You can find details here.

Is BitTorrent traffic on a non-standard BitTorrent port (10009) throttled?
The BitTorrent upload (seeding) worked. Our tool was successful in uploading data using the BitTorrent protocol.

There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP upload achieved at least 581 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved at most 652 Kbps. You can find details here.

This is exactly the sort of thing I like to see! A very promising result, and a torrent download also worked fine, it maxed out my connection (since I use a good private tracker this is what I expect)

I ran the same test a couple of minutes ago. Torrent download basically not working at this point, I am unable to update with my tracker. It says "connection closed by peer". Online the torrent is said to have 293 seeders and 2 leachers. I am connected to 1 seeder, the only peer I can see.

Evening test results:

It seems to me like my connection to trackers is being stopped by Orcon. This is a lot different to prioritising packets of data. It is severely limiting. I want to know what on earth you are up to

well i was on adsl2+ but there was some stuff interrupting the frequency so we went back to adsl1 but we push the speeds dayly
