Hi,

I found a few forums though none too recent concerning this issue. I'm not a heavy p2p user by any stretch but I tried using uTorrent this evening and although I get the green DHT tick in the box, every torrent i add to the queue goes red. I haven't seen this before and am wondering if Orcon is straight out blocking my connection through uTorrent. It seems to be uploading fine though which seems odd to me. I've still got a good 2gigs left on my account this month?
Any suggestions?

It's not just going slowly, it's not going at all. Is that considered shaping?

You will probably find that its something to do with Seeders and/or your trackers. Make sure your ports are open ready to accept and transmit data for uTorrent.

I use uTorrent on Orcon+ and it works perfectly every time.

check what your Queue limit is , i think the default is 2 so if you start any more than that then they wont work, you have to change it yourself

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yeah there was only 3 things in the queue and it should have been fine. I'll have to do some more research on how the seeders/trackers work. At my old house/ISP it just used to work and I never had to worry about it.

What are the trackers you are using? are they public trackers or private? If they are private you wont have the rights to use the trackers (unless you register with the site in question), you will be able to find this information out on the status of the torrent, it will say something about you not having permission

I assume they were public but I'll have to check when I get home. Interesting, I left it going overnight to see if it would eventually start and it has downloaded overnight. So I guess that they were Public? Does that mean that Orcon were blocking my torrent downloads at peak time?

I don't know of any ISP that outright blocks torrents, hwoever almost all ISP's manage the amount of bandwidth p2p can use in peak times to ensure reasonable performance for general web/email etc.

Do you have uTorrent set to use UPNP, NAT-PMP or are you using a manually forwarded port?

if your using torrents that rely on the pirate bay trackers then thats the problem

uTorrent is using UPNP, not sure about NAT-PMP, will have to check when I get home. I used to manually use a forwarded port which worked fine at my old place/ISP but now when I use it, the torrents work fine but all other traffic eg browsing, downloading doesn't work at all. So I switched to using UPNP which seemed to work ok.

They may well have been pirate bay trackers, I'm not sure, why would that be a problem out of interest?

Hm.. I dunno. I don't seem to have issues with torrents no matter what time of day. I usually use torrents to file share with a few of my mates and it works every time, no matter whether its during peak hours or not.

I wasn't judging, it seems fair to me. In my (admittedly limited) experience, some trackers are totally unavailable at certain times of the day. Maybe that's because the other stuff is getting hit hard and you need the bandwidth, I don't have a problem with that, just letting the OP know.

Turn off DHT and see if that helps.

Some modems/routers don't like it at all and tend to fall over, also from observation orcon connections don't like DHT in general and the connection ends up harshly managed.

Let us pick up our pitchforks, grab some torches and start a x-plan hunt on your favourite ISP!

Oh yes of course they manage. But they said block which doesnt mean manage.

I actually get pretty decent speeds during peak hours too.
