So disappointed with Orcon as well-- been with them now for 4 months and its consistently gotten worse and worse. Some of us can only DL at night when we're home from work. We're very close to switching to Telecom! Today-- downloading a file from RS, was at about 10, then went down to 4.8kbps then stopped completely about 5pm. I too cannot even load rapidshare.. Have complained to Orcon several times about our ridiculously low speeds-- youtube, megavideo, even my work stuff in the US is impossible to load, and they said they'd turn on interleaving, it hasnt done a thing... still .89mbps most places in the world. Sigh. Was really hoping Orcon would be good. Gave them a go and now, :( no go.
Well, I don't use reapidshare very much, in fact I tried to use it for just the 2nd or 3rd time since I've been with Orcon, just over 2 months. I was not impressed at all. I was trying to download a file of about 40mb at about 9pm. Guess what? Absolutley zilch. Would not even start the download. I can understand that shaping needs to happen during peak hours, but why must they completely block it? I've been reading all this negative feedback about Orcon since I'd joined, and thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. But in only 2 months there are a few annoyances creeping in which are making me think again.
Traffic shaping is a reality and its how they ensure good, no I mean reasonable speeds to the rest of the network at peak times without spending a fortune on bandwidth capacity! If you guys a serious DL's try a VPN based proxy, hidemyass.com have one; I have never tried it. I have tried one in the past and it was awesome just cant remember what it was called!! These cost about 7US a month and will give you the means to DL from rapidshare anytime of the day you want at full speed!

I definitely wouldn't consider myself a downloader, it's very frustrating when you do want to download something and find you can't because the ISP deems it unsuitable for you to do so from that parituclar place.
i just think switch and ditch orcon i haven't herd very good things about it. i will just say this Quote it was from a telecom add spoof but you will get the general idear. If your pi$%ed off with Telecom Do something About it Close Your Accounts and Take your Business Somewhere else.
Well if you're the first person on Orcon watching that particular video recently it may not be cached at first. There's no way Orcon (or Telecom) can pre cache everything on youtube.
When you do come across a slow loading youtube give it a few seconds then reload the page it probably be coming from the cache the 2nd time.
The cache will actually fetch the youtube video on the users behalf. With the lower latency and higher priorotiy in the network all files sourced from the CDN will scream down.
There are some cases were youtube don't direct the video source from the local cahes. These can be slow as they come from Japan/LA etc.
ie the user will ask the cache for the file. The cache will then go Oh thats not on my local raid and then contact the youtube farm and get the video
The cache farm has been optimised for this type of transfer so its able to fetch it alot faster than a regular user, so while its not as fast as getting it from local disk, its faster than the user downloading it direct.
