If youre convinced its not your equipment etc potentially causing the fault, then get back onto Snap to get a tech on-site to have a look.... a good tech will run checks inside the house, then outside where the line comes in and work their way back until they find the issue... however if they find it is your "fault" or bad cabling within the property, you will most likely be charged a call out which is around $90 I think...

Thanks xpd for that information, I might look into that.

One thing that I've hesitated to mention for fear of ridicule is the fact that there is an alarm system in our house; however we're renting and it has never been enabled (don't look me up to try and break in, by the way :) but perhaps this may be the issue? I don't recall having troubles with Xnet, but then again, broadband speeds have never been mindblowing.

I might just have to get a techy to investigate that, and also the other elements you mention, if there's nothing wrong with my equipment etc then this might be the link.

Do monitored alarms affect the speed, or do they not allow you to connect at all?

My downstream is lucky to get up to 1,100kbps, but a lot of the time it hovers around the 500 kbp/s mark.

I just purchased a new Belkin 4-port ADSL2+ router because my old one gave out; the connection doesn't drop anymore but the speeds were still as bad as ever.

I'm not sure what to do from here... other than move into Wellington city :)

Before my cabinet was upgraded, i had line attenuation of 53db... and i could consistently achieve a synch speed of around 3500 - 3800 kbs downstream... so there is definitely an issue somewhere. From the exchange to the cabinet, or the cabinet to your house. Otherwise it could be an issue with the wiring at your house.

See if you know someone techie to nosey the wiring at your house first.

Yeah, I definitely will do. The Snap support team reckon that I should be getting much better speeds than what I've been getting; I will see if I know anyone who can potentially diagnose the issue. I'm moving into Wellington City very soon, so it may be an issue for the rest of the family to deal with :) being the good citizen/sibling/son that I am, I'll use all of you guys' advice to see what I can come up with... I'll keep you in the loop for any future issues that other users may experience.

Monitored alarms "might" cause a problem, I know that when you use to get ADSL, it was a common query and if you said yes to having one, it was highly recommended to get a central filter installed. Obviously this came at a cost........
