Hey guys,

I'm a new forum user, and have read tips on this site for years - thought it was time to sign up because I believe some of you may have the answers to my question(s).

Anyway, I've recently joined with Snap and was connected last night. However, the speeds I've been getting have been less than mind-blowing, and while they were fantastic in getting me set up really quickly, the initial speeds have been slightly disheartening.

Here's where I'm hoping that it's something to do with me, that I can fix.

My speedtest to Wellington shows this:

https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/imagessubs/blog9ba55171e6eeec61d0099643f4925bb9.jpg

My speedtest to LA, shows this:

https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/imagessubs/blog17b52762fa9097b7cbb0b713b235f39f.jpg

So it seems to me there's something amiss here. I also get a C grade on the pingtest.net site.

My modem (DSE XH7916) is showing UPSTREAM at 544 kbps, and downstream at 320 kbps.

Now, I know a tiny bit about computers but I'm hoping someone can help me find out why I'm going so slow. I've e-mailed their support team and am waiting to hear back from them - I may phone later today, too.

I'm on Naked DSL Plan B (FS/FS, 20Gb).

I look forward to your responses... and the "man, not another person jumping on the Snap bandwagon" jokes :)

Thanks guys,

Jeff

try this program its called the TCP optimizer and is found here http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php easy to use and it does work . but make sure that all your TCP/IP settings have been updated , they should have been done if Snap helped you set up, but check the settings you have to what is on the Snap website

Those speedtest results reflect the modems ADSL sync speeds you posted. There is an issue there that needs to be looked at by Snap/Telecom.

Once that's resolved you can enjoy Snap's fast national speeds and slow International speeds :)

Assuming you are pasting that from your DSL modem and that is it's ADSL sync speeds, being with Snap and it being Saturday night has nothing to do with it - that's between you and the exchange.

Ah okay then :)

If you're talking about a speedtest.net result then I wouldn't trust that either. When I was on Snap (Thurday) I could speedtest at 5-10Mbit but still only get 50kB/s (400kbit/s) actual throughput from various servers in the US, AU and EU.

Snap are doing something odd within their network which is making their real world International speed slow whilst allowing speedtest.net to report good speeds.

Jeff's quoting a downstream connection speed of 320 kbs, which is just ridiculous, now either he's more than 5kms out from the exchange or there's a problem in the line between him and the exchange or cabinet.

We need to see his line stats to get more information, specifically the downstream and upstream attenuation.

Yes, as I said in my first post to this thread.

The network is fine for me at the moment during peak time.. currently have a download averaging around 1300 kB/s and watching 9 minute length youtube video with around a 1 minutes buffer ahead so no stopping and starting.

During non peak, 9 minute Youtube video buffers fully after about 3 or 4 minutes.

Glad it works for someone.

It didn't work for us for the last 3 months (50kB/s International speeds vs. 1.3MB/s national), Snap support confirmed that it was a known issue with their network which wasn't a priority to fix.

No worries :-) Not sure about Snap's overall performance, as it's usually fine for me, but I think Jeff has a line problem? Or it seems like it.

Before my cabinet was upgraded, whenever it rained, my line speed died altogether, couldnt even get a dialtone on the phone, chorus guy said that before upgrade, rain soaked the lines :( happened often too.

Hey guys,

Thanks all for your valuable advice; apologies for the late response. Now, for the stats... first, the modem I'm using is a fairly old-school DSE Modem. The details that I have are as follows:

-----

Product: XH7916 - DSE ADSL Router USB + UTP

ADSL stats (copied direct)

ADSL Connection Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 13.1 dB 13.0 dB
Line Attenuation 42.5 dB 31.5 dB
Errored Seconds 28 2
Loss of Signal 2 2
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 0 0
Data Rate 416 Kbps 576 Kbps
Latency INTERLEAVED INTERLEAVED

-----

I've also had a response from Snap, which is quite useful:

"You are physically 2km from your exchange, so you should expect a much better speed than this. On your screenshots you are synced at 320kbit, but i have done a line check now, and see you are synced at 1100kbit. But i also notice about 42db of noise on your line, which could be caused by an unfiltered phone, unfiltered sky, or a monitored alarm system, or possibly bad wiring somewhere. This is probably what is causing you to get slower than expected speeds."

There is nothing else plugged into a phone line anywhere in the house (using Naked DSL, no Sky). It may be some dodgy wiring somewhere, in which case would need a techy to fix I'd imagine. There is also a monitored alarm but it had never caused any problems with my old Xnet connection.

Thanks in advance again for your assistance guys... really appreciate it.

My ADSL Speed with SNAP

As you can see, the sync speeds with my DSLAM is quite good. Sometimes my downloads from servers such as Microsoft Corportation tops out at 950kbps+ using DAP.

Sometimes for a few seconds it downloads at 1000kbps+. My exchange is somewhere between 0.60 - 0.95km from my house.

Holy crap those are awesome speeds!

My downstream is lucky to get up to 1,100kbps, but a lot of the time it hovers around the 500 kbp/s mark.

I just purchased a new Belkin 4-port ADSL2+ router because my old one gave out; the connection doesn't drop anymore but the speeds were still as bad as ever.

I'm not sure what to do from here... other than move into Wellington city :)
