UBA is the name of the service Orcon gets from Telecom wholesale when you are connected to Telecom equipment in the cabinet (or the exchange) instead of Orcon equipment in the Exchange.

So your problem should hopefully be fixed when the work order to change you over is completed, usually takes a few business days depending on the backlog of work the techies have to do in your region.

Orcon won't be putting their equipment into the cabinets any time soon. This is because they consider the pricing they have to pay Telecom Wholesale (set by the Commerce commission) for housing gear in the cabinet and backhaul network transit from the cabinet to Orcon as too expensive to be economically viable.

Would you recommend I swap over to telecom then? Even though I have been totally dedicated to Orcon 100% it seems orcon hasn't been 100% to me. I don't think it will be fixed anytime soon Orcon has dissapointed me a number of times. I am wondering if it's possible if interleaving being off is supported in that cabinet? would you know? I am confused on how it works. Because with orcon I have my interleaving turned off for bettery sync/latency.

Hi, yes you can have interleaving turned off, however on Telecom Plans they only offer it with the Pro plan, if you stay with Orcon (but on Telecoms UBS service) then yes it can be turned off on any plan (as I understand it). regardless there is no technical limitation in turing interleaving off on a cabinet, but not all plans allow it.

If you are connected to an exchange that Orcon has equipment in, they will provide the ADSL service via their own gear.

If you are connected to an exchange that Orcon does not have equipment they will provide the ADSL service via Telecom Wholesale equipment.

If you are connected to a cabinet then your connection can be passed through to the exchange but this has performance problems (as mentioned earlier) so they prefer to provide the ADSL service via Telecom Wholesale equipment in the cabinet. This gives you the best line sync speed.

Your Line > Gear in the Cabinet > Backhaul network > ISP Handover point

Changing ISP

I would say changing ISP is a separate decision you would need to make based on which ISP's offers phone and Internet plans that best fit your requirements/needs.

If I was you I would work out...

- What's the max you want to spend per month on phone & internet
- How many a landline to mobile calls you make, how many minutes on average
- How many toll calls from your land line
- How much Internet data per month
- What sort of peak time download speeds will you be happy with
- Are you willing to pay a premium for better speed, of is low cost more important to you
- Are you willing to look at voip and naked adsl vs landline and regular adsl.
- Are you using an @orcon email address that you are relying on, if so you will need to register a domain or switch to using gmail as you will probably not want to rely on an ISP address when you no longer use the ISP
.. etc

Basically make a short list of ISP's that best meet your requirements and hit the forums to see if people are complaining about that ISP before you change.

Well I use orcon platinum money doesn't bother me it's all about performance and orcon was awesome for it especially when calls to australia are free and an extra gb of net is only 2$ compared to telecoms 20$ lol and the interleaving off was awesome my ping has dropped substantially because of that and of course the homehub would anyone know if you can cancel the rental use my own router and pay less? I have asked orcon no one has got back to me. It all started when this cabinet stuff came along everything started to go down hill. I guess I need to wait until orcon gets their ADSL2+ equipment in there. I think it's harder for orcon because telecom comes first all the time even though telecom their company is dodgy and the government is with them I still hate telecoms guts. I have had a worst past with them they are the main reason why and everone knows why our net is a complete fail to the world

I guess you will be a very old man once that happens, I suggest you move on as this is not going to happen anytime soon.

I think you summation of NZs net being a fail due to Telecom is a very uniformed comment. The actual level of FTTN (cabnetisation) that is currently happening is an indication that they are infact catching up very fast from a long period of inactivity, much in my view due to the past leadership.

The act of cabnetisation may have impacted on you in a negative sense with Orcon, however to the wider community (and you once you go back on that cabinet) and their ability to access good speed internet its the best thing so far to happen to the net in NZ for a long time.

Yeah thats true cyril. Hahahaha I don't want to be old and wrinkley.

Well I know that the lines here are basically telecoms and they went a little bit behind but then again oh well what can I do. And yes I fully agree with you my download speed which everyone bassically loves has increased from 3mbps to 10 which is pretty good

Hi, you are currently on ADSL1 because your line is being interfered with, changing back to the cabinet as Orcon have said they will do in the next short while I believe is them doing the best by you and getting the best connection they can offer, and as such I dont think I would get to concerned with false advertising claims.

By the way what are your current modem line stats, and as far as you are aware are you still connected to Orcons DSLAM not the cabinet, which I presume is a change still to happen.

lol but still it's false advertising hahaha. It's just like telecoms claimed xtra go plan which claimed maximum that your line could handle lol it's on the nzherald.

I am currently on the cabinet now I will post my results of orcons DSLAM and the cabinet results. I am quite far from the exchange but still got better upload which is what I kind of rely on and I know it affects my ping too

Hi, there is an issue, for some reason your modem has decided to switch back to ADSL, maybe its been set that way, it should be either in multimode or ADSL2+, but at 8.6dB attenuation you should be getting 16-18Mb/s not 9Mb/s.

Yup thats correct but remember the cabinet isnt set up for adsl2+ lol. See my issue now? hahaha I should be getting the best speed ever but no. If i set my modem to adsl2+ i don't get net adsl2 i don't get net because the cabinet isnt set up for it that's why my attenuation is better though because the cabinet is close. Help me cyril!

Hmm I woudnt have a clue where the cabinet is my adress is Taitimu Drive it says this This address is scheduled to be connected to a roadside cabinet using faster broadband equipment (ADSL2+ technology) by Jan 2010.

But I don't get it. Isnt the cabinet that's already there new and adsl2+ ready? it just has telecoms tools in there no orcon stuff. The cabinet is new btw its about 1 week old lol

Hi, I recommend you just remove that detail now, for your own peace of mind :) and personal security.

So it would seem that the cabinet you are on is not fully commisioned yet, but will be by next month. So I would wait and see, but the cabinet will by then be fully DSL2+ capable and your speeds should double.

Edit, during commisioning the cabinet may be operational but full performance is not always there, this is quite common when the cabinets are brought online.
