richms: The problem with the smart phone software is that if the call never hits the phone, or if you are on a call and it triggers call waiting, it will not happen.

If I am talking to someone I want to, and get "withheld waiting" you can guarentee that I will not put someone I want to be talking to on hold to speak to someone that I probably will just be telling to go away and then hanging up on.

Network side blocking has existed for years on PSTN in the states, is on some mobile networks and is a feature I want to see here. But extend it to all unavailable numbers not just withheld. I am sick of 000000 from telemarketers etc who just hide behind an overseas call center too. All the legit overseas calls come with working ID now, its just the 3rd world call centers that send all zeros so block em too...

those 000000 calls i ignore, if they dont want to display their number i dont want to talk with them

Think most of the 0000 calls are international and if they come via the Telecom gateway the CLID gets stripped out..

Most of the 0000 calls we get are from Aussie call centres offering me a "free vacation package" for only $60 (the call went something like this: "are you selling something?" "no" "carry on then" "oh well we're offering a vacation package for only $60..." "wait, I asked if you were selling something, you said no, and then you offer me a product in exchange for money, that's selling something" "oh, I'm so sorry to have wasted your time sir") and sometimes it's from Mercury Energy telling me to tie up the dog so they can do a meter reading. From memory, Baycorp will also appear as 0000.

Anyway, I'll tell you why I restrict my number - it's the only way to keep it out of the phone book. And keeping your number out of the book is the only way to keep it out of the hands of most marketers (except the scum that dial numbers one after the other in sequence, like the aforementioned "free vacation" folks)
