Looks okay to me, sites that are a further distance away are impacted by latency. Did you hear anything more from Orcon? Maybe they can indicate whether there was specific outage that affected you for the evening?

Orcon are useless like this. They don't care much about what happens right now, let alone what happened (or not) previously.

Thanks for taking the time to read/give feedback.

If you are getting 11mbit to Auckland and 5mbit to London, I would say that is pretty standard.

London is quite far away from NZ internet wise, as all traffic goes to LA first and then via 2 or 3 other carriers.

The high latency will also cause the speed decrease.

As for last nights issue you had, would be interested to see if the same happens tonight. We have little say in how the UBA network runs, however I can ensure you the Orcon core and national/international links were running as expected last night.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

When we got cabinetised our connection went totally to pot. IDSN speeds. Maybe not even that good. Dial-up speeds. Then on UBA things improved massively.

Any idea when we will be able to get back on Orcon+ network? At the time there was some discussion about it being an issue between Chorus' equipment in the cabinets and Orcon's equipment in the exchange.

The other question is when will VDSL be available to Ponsonby?

Cheers

brookz:
World of Warcraft has becaome unplayabe again during peak hours. Using a tunnel to play doesn't change anything either.

Web browsing is also really choppy.

I've had this problem since mid January. I've been calling Orcon, (daily, at first.. 'til i admitted defeat) and have found them to be massively unhelpful. All other times I have had problems with my connection I couldn't find fault in customer service.

My connection is generally fine during the day, come 6pm or so I notice a dramatic change in international speed. Around 2-3am when it picks up to normal again.

I am hesitant to change ISP as I don't want to be locked into a lengthy contract, but it is looking more and more like that's the only option here.

Tonight it's terrible too. Hasn't been like this for a while.

My conclusion is as follows (opinion only) : Orcon has congestion at peak hours

I'm not trying to bag Orcon, they're a greast business, but this is the conclusion I draw form your testing. Why?

1. You get normal performance during the day - so your modem and PC can handle decent throughput
2. Your connection and sync speeds look okay - modem is capable and line is capable
3. local traffic remains at good performance - rules out ISAM congestion
4. International traffic is only affect during set times of the night.

Happy to be proven wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.

Do you know anyone esle int he same area (a neighbour?) who can do the same tests? If they are on a different ISP then you'll be able to at least prove out if it's specific to Orcon.

Quote: Anybody else noticed these symptoms and may have a solution?

Yup, i notice the exact same symptoms.

We have WoW - and it's unplyable most of the time, when isay unplayable i mean:
1. Raiding - Any time you have alot going on the data down just stops. (VoA is awfull for example)
2. The latency makes pvp or arena impossible
3. I'll get severed from Blizzards end if i enter the WG keep and a battle is on
4. Any time there are more than ten people on the screen actual latency (like that shown on cast bar mods such as Quartz) sky rocket
5. We use WoWtunnels which pretty much is the only thing allowing me to play the game right now.

Browsing is choppy, the data just pauses, you notice this most while working with webmail or forum posts as it will stop while you are composing and fail when sending/posting.

The annoying thing, the servers i use are in the Emberstorm battlegroup, the speed to the states is just awfull ALL the time. (at best i get 3mbs, however the most common number under 1mbs, often in the 200kbs range)

I might be getting 6mbs to NZ while only having 200kbs to the states - This is not the quality i expect for the monthly bill.

It's either Telecom (UBA), Orcon, or both. I suspect contention ratios have got out of whack, and as soon as people get home and also after dinner, using the net is terrible.

Anyone from Orcon here reading this?

Thanks

Our upstream had rerouted wow traffic via another circuit last week, which caused issues. We have got them to reroute traffic back to the best path.

Was last night any better?

As for the choppy browsing, is that all sites?

I don't seem to have the same issues on my home connection, which is why we need as much information as possible to find the cause. My web browsing has ben excellent and I am always getting good speedtest results.

Download speeds have been pretty poor the last 3 days, especially international. Even Google is slow :/

Not amused...

Ditto.

I filed an issue ticket with Orcon on 28/02/10. They responded asking for a whole host of data which I took 30 mins to crunch together and provide them with (not something your average user could do, either so comprehensively or so quickly).

They have not responded. Not confirmed that they have received the info, or kept me in the loop at all.

It seems to go like this with Orcon:

1. Submit a support ticket
2. Orcon request information
3. You provide the information
4. Time passes.
5. The service gets better for some unknown reason.
6. The service gets worse again.
7. Repeat from step 1 above.

Been pretty terrible last few nights and again tonight. Nothing changed at this end - DSL sync still fine.

What now?
