Hi,

I come from Telecom DSL where I was on a normal plan (aka - non big time). The download speed was always between 10-14 mbps.

I have recently subscribed to Orcon because I want a temporary solution and I don't want to subscribe for an year. I was shocked to see download speeds of 256-512kbps (kilo bits, not bytes). I tested with SCP/FTP/HTTP on multiple servers.

I tried Download Accelerator Plus and with 5 threads the speed goes to 1mbps, maybe 2mbps so it's clearly an Orcon Limit in place.

I know another person on Orcon with identical issues and silly me, I was trying to convince him that in our days, download accelerators are useless. Well, they are, unless you have Orcon as your ISP.

I can't understand why if I pay per GB I don't have maximum speed. Well, I do. Probably because Orcon doesn't pay for enough international bandwidth. And the monthly subscription is bloody expensive, even more expensive than Telecom !

Anybody else noticed these symptoms and may have a solution?

Thanks.

Have you called Orcon?
Can you post your line stats here.
Did you test to local, NZ servers?

Wow, that was a fast response, thanks!

I only have issues with international downloads. Local downloads (http://ftp.nz.debian.org for example) go all the way to 5mbps which my modem is synced to.

What annoys me is the multiple threads thing. I don't understand why such a limit would exist.

I haven't called Orcon. My friend did and he lost 2 days trying to explain the issue and he was getting silly answers.

Post your modem settings, and also what plan are you on. Best to at least try orcon in the first instance.

It could be a simply case of congestion, what time of day was it, i know that during the evenings around 8.30 - 9.30 experiences a pretty big hit on http throughput.

Also what type fo traffic were you trying? some suggestions to try and post results
1. speedtest.net (do international and local)
2. you tube browsing
3. straight ftp download
4. straight http download

Post all this and see what we come up with.

Just ran a speedtest to
* NZ = 6.4 MBit
* AU = 2.1 Mbit
* UK = 6 MBit

But latency seems to be crazy on all of these link
The actual load of speedtest or pingtest sites is taking minutes. Have we got another CDN issue?

Do you have any of your modem connecti9on settings? Or the status page from your modem so we can see your connection speed etc?

The 4.84 mb/s does not reflect the real speed.. It took about 2mins for the test to even complete.

World of Warcraft has becaome unplayabe again during peak hours. Using a tunnel to play doesn't change anything either.

Web browsing is also really choppy.

Experiencing strangely slow download speeds here in Auckland. Unusually slow. National and international.

Can you show me your line stats?

Sounds very like a last mile problem, especially if there are national issues.

Mine is going like a rocket ship currently

Sure - here you go.

UBA in a central Auckland suburb. Not far from a cabinet connected to Ponsonby by fibre (as I understand it).

Cheers
