System: if its naked dsl i didn't think you needed filters


You do need filters. Since you are putting data over a voice line you need to filter out the excess noise from the voice signal so it does not interfere with the data signal.

Naked DSL just means that they are putting their equipment in the exchange.

ATinyChipmunk: Ive found the faster your upload the better, i just moved from paraparaumu where i had cable, so 2mbit up gave me around 25-30ping, i was in a server last night, 400-1000 :S


That has a slight trouth. Yes a faster upload can do no harm but no you do not need it.

Ie. Lets say CSS uses 6KB/s up.

If no one else is using the upload you'll get that 6KB/s no problem so all the data will get through straight away.

If some one else is using the net they will most probibly be uploading at some level, the more they upload the less likely you are to have the 6KB/s you need. If other users or programs are cutting into that 6KB/s you need it will cause you to lagg because the game will have to catch up with the data it has not sent.


10KB/s should be fine for 1 user and maybe 2, just running the game. If you have more users or some one is downloading or torrenting this may cause you some issues.

Oh yes, i was meaning if your using NDSL with a POTS line.

If your just using it for VOIP with no phones plugged directly into the line then yes you can go without a filter.

Was thinking about my setup for some reason, we have a VOIP phone and a POTS line.

Depends on how you look at it really, was looking at it from the prospective of VOIP meaning you nolonger need a voice line. Technically you could have both as i do.

Im just confusing things now, so ill but out ;P

Thats exactly what I get when it negotiates RE-ADSL - 121k up - sometimes 90 or so.

Force it to adsl2+, if you cant get a modem where you can.

Well i havnt herd back yet other than they have forwarded it onto their team.

So i guess they will be doing a port reset. Ill have to let you know how it goes.

In the mean time try changing the ADSL Line Mode to ADSL2+ rather than auto detect

Advanced > Internet > ADSL > Select line modes > Un tick all apart from ADSL2+

I have done the above and that got my upload up to 965kbit. thats great but the download has stayed the same, the chart did say i was in the 10mbit area.

Download Speed: 2350 kbps (293.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 627 kbps (78.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 19 ms
Jitter: 0 ms
Packet Loss: 0 %

Could be a number of things causing the low sync speed:

- Poor physical connection at the port in the exchange/cabinet
- ADSL port config/profile
- Some problem with the line wiring to your house
- Internal house phone wiring
- Interference from other phone devices in your house (monitored alarm, sky, fax), make sure all these have adsl filters.

Try and rule out everything you can on your end and work with the Slingshot tech's (if/when they get back to you).

We have nothing else plugged into the phone wires at all, and i tried 4 diff ports around the house all got the same speed :( Still waiting on a reply from slingshot.

If you dont have a proper install, get one. IMO ISP's should not waste their time trying to resolve disconnection or low speed issues until people have a proper splitter and internal wiring.

They should pay for it then.

No reason those of us with one or two jacks should have to pay $150 when one of the filters provided with the modem works (roughly) as well.

Not the ISPs job to sort out customer side equipment. IMO this is another reason why the current demarc points fail. If they could say plug your router into the demarc, oh look its fine thankyou goodbye it would save so much grief with 50 year old internal wiring and other problems like people using extension cords on adsl.
