It's already throttled to pieces. Unlimited is unlimited though. Good for downloading software updates and legitimate stuff. P2P will be certainly throttled but they do have their excellent torrent cache system -- if you're downloading something popular, you'll get ~400kB/s down from a Slingshot cache peer.

Yeah but how may exchanges have they got there own gear installed in (unbundled exchange)? You only get the deal when connected to there own equipment!

They don't necessarily need their own gear in exchanges? What's wrong with existing setup? Unless I'm missing the point completely...

This doesn't just apply to unbundled exchanges.I don't think they have installed their own equipment in many, if any excahnges, despite that woman who used to run it saying they would if it ever became unbundled.  I believe they maybe in a partnership with anohter ISP to do unbundling. However these ISPs who do unbundle, they are just going to install their own equipment in the excahnges in the main centres, so less profitable areas will likely miss out, and telecom will be the only option,

- Slingshot changed to offer plans over their own (not Vodafone's) unbundled network, which they call the "Better Network", which does cover a fair few exchanges. Check your address here and if the next page says "Because you're in our Better Network..." then you're covered.
- NBR says that the unlimited plan will only be offered in Slingshot's LLU network:

The all-you-can-eat Slingshot deal will only be available for customers on Callplus/Slingshot's own network - that is Telecom exchanges where the company has installed its own gear under local loop unbundling (LLU). "We have nine exchanges live with another 28 scheduled for completion in the next 3 months for 37 in total Mr Callander told NBR.

edit: Im surprised its unbundled exchange only, i didnt think that data traffic over the dsl link was a major cost for ISPs. Maybe they went this way as they already have competitive backhaul arrangements as their unbundled exchanges are in main centres.

The main cost/issue with an unlimited plan is international traffic. With slingshots extensive torrent caching they have an advantage over telecom here.

With a little bit of naivity/wishful thinking, maybe the recent drop in performance on their torrent caches is to do with them upgrading them for this plan?

according the the NBR article from manhinli:

"There would be no throttling at any time of day"

So this will either be a roaring success or congested fail.

Ask xnet about the problems they have with backhaul congestion - and the idiots that regulated this made it so telecom only have to provide an impossibly small amount per customer as part of the regulated deal. IMO thats the only compelling reason to install your own gear into exhcanges.

"excelent"? Lol... Almost never kicks in, often leave you sitting on the same 99.something percent it has with no possibility for another peer connection because they block tracker comms and bugger up DHT to the point where you see almost nothing. The only hope to see other peers is thru peer exchange.

It can't store the full 100% due to legal reasons (ie. if pirated material is cached).

I need to learn to read -- if this is for Slingshot's LLU only then it's of no help to me :P.

The Slingshot forums has a little more from Slingshot. http://forums.slingshot.co.nz/viewtopic.php?p=38212#p38212

I am able to share a little more information about this plan prior to its launch:

1: It will be designed to ensure that customers on limited plans are not impacted. EG: The unlimited customers will not "steal all your bandwidth".
2: The unlimited plan will have an improved International bandwidth allocation per user compared with our existing plans.

More information will be released next week!

I'm hoping they got that the wrong way around, unlimited users having more bandwidth than the users who pay for there data #wrong.

Will caching be able to be turned on and off for this plan?

Well that shows how bad our mainstream journalism is, because the article I read didn't mention that it only applied to their own unbundled excahnges. Thats a rather major sticking point I no longer read NBR either since they paywalled some of the stories, but at least it covers more facts.

They are not going to get 10,000 customers very quickly if they have only got 9 exchanges unbundled so far, so I don't think there is any risk of missing out. You will only miss out if they don't do your exchange in time.

This is a marketing masterpiece, the timing is right on.

I really hope Slingshot can deliver a reasonable service, I'll give it a go but won't hold my breath.
