For anyone facing a similar problem in the future I will continue to update as I progress through the Disputes Tribunal and complaint to Commerce Commission.

Simple fact is I was with Slingshot a week and the service was appalling and unusable with no help offered by the help desk.

$150 may seem like a tiny amount of money, but its the attitude I dislike. Any amount of bad press I will deliver to Slingshot here and in the NZ Herald once this plays out will be reward enough for the time I will invest.

I suspect that if slingshot was a member of the TDR, they wouldn't let it to this point...

I play TF2 now and then and always have a lower ping then my friend who is on Telecom...

Not all Slingshot customers have such bad experience with gaming.

Just thought I'd add that.

The problem is not that slingshot has bad performance it's that you where using it during off peak time when it is slow.

But I don't think that is slingshots fault they clearly advertise that they are the off peak hrs. While they don't say that speed will be slow I this that common sence tells you that it will be slow during those hrs.

I am on slingshot and once I got my modem setup properly ( bought a new modem, changed address and got a new computer about the same time as changing) my performance is better then on Orcon, telecom or xnet. Though I have been getting problems lately on Sunday afternoons but it's only on my Mac which is wireless the windows pc is fine so it may be a wireless/ router problem. Restarting the router works for about 30 min

I am sorry you are having problems but i don't think gaming performance during the unlimited offpeak download hours is an accurate reflection of gaming performance of isp in general. I play a couple of online games hosted in Europe and the US and latency are slightly lower than telecom during the peak times.

Ohhhh, thanks for clearing that up. Here I was thinking it was Slingshots fault and all along it was my fault.  I wanted to browse at 19:30pm, game at 04:00am and download at a speed above 128kb/s, now I understand! Boy, do I feel a little silly now...

One question, do you also think its fair, because I lacked the common sense, that i be charged $230 for six days of appalling/unusable internet after spending 10 days with no internet due to Slingshots initial and admitted ineptitude?

If Slingshot had have simply waived the contract fee in line with the Consumer Guarantees Act they would've avoided the $5000 to $6000 I will ultimately cost them in time and aggravation, whether I win or lose. I would've remained the the quiet reader I have been for a very long time on this website.

Absolutely, without a doubt, stay away from Slingshot - it's the worst ISP in New Zealand.

this fricking sucks. i'm in the same position as OP.
Was on telecom's big time, was getting awesome download speeds. Now with slingshot. it has dropped so much. Super angry, might do a ETF and sign up with telecom again. they're doing the double data usage promotion.

i lodged a complaint, they asked me to do speedtests. however, the speedtest results are fine and fast.
BUT when you watch youtube and download file from websites, it's super slow.

I bet they would say something along the lines " your speedtest results are fine what are you complaining about".

The same experience here. Speed test results were flawless, every time. At times the connection was so bad it would take 30 minutes to watch a 2 minute YouTube clip. A speed test run at the same time would produce unbelievably quick results. I couldn't browse a page, watch a video clip or play a game, but I sure could run the feet off a speed test.

Hit them in the revenue(s) gentlemen. Some easy and cheap ways to do so:

1. Call them to complain, a lot.
2. Tell friends/workmates/clients about about your terrible Slingshot experience.
3. Write a letter of complaint to Commerce Commission - long term plan, will ultimately cost them a fortune.
4. Disputes Tribunal - Slingshot can refuse to attend but it will still cost them ~$1500 to respond.
5. Small Claims Court - everyone I have spoken too has won by default, Slingshot won't attend.

Don't skip to step 5, take your time and cost Slingshot as much money as you can, legally.

So far this experience has cost me $80, 10 days downtime and 6 days of appalling internet service.

I've completed step 1, step 2 is ongoing and now waiting until the billing month ends to see if they are stupid enough to bill my credit card for the $150 fee.

Keep your whinging to this single thread and keep it constructive or else it will be knocked on the head. I know you have been burnt, so does everyone else, don't drag this out more than is necessary.
