I made the swap to Slingshot. I was a gamer, Steam and Battlenet mainly, but a gamer I was.

I went from 25 pings with Telecom to 350 to 450 pings with Slingshot.

Yes you heard that right... I'm back in 1996, like Doctor Who I have travelled back in time in a 33.6k baud Tardis.

Are you a gamer? Stay away. For the love of god... STAY AWAY.

What servers are you connecting to?

You know Slingshot have a Steam server.

Hi there, when did you move to Slingshot? Or when did you have the problems?

I'm a gamer myself and all my games have been running fine. Recently (starting on the 16th August) I started running into some connection issues, but these are general connection issues, so it affected browsing etc, but other than that it has been ok.

Some of the games I play are Bad Company 2, Team Fortress 2 (on Steam), Starcraft 2 (havent really played on the Battle.net so I'm not sure of this one).

Yesterday.

No offence buddy, but there is no way you are gaming on Slingshot. You may have previously, but as the of 17th of August, you cannot. Even browsing is bordering on pointless. I haven't seen this many 404's in 12 years.

Dollar for dollar - Slingshot is 20 to 30 times worse than Telecom for gaming performance.

I have no doubt in my mind, unless something changes, I wont be playing any online games for the next 6 months. At which time I'm getting the hell out.

Usual spots - ON3Network.co.nz, Battle.net, Gameplanet NZ and some west coast Australian servers.

I have a solution though, I've started playing on a hot new server located at 127.0.0.1

Can you post some some tracerts to servers you play on?

FYI: It might just be exchange congestion only affecting your area and not all Slingshot users.

That's what I said. As far as I was concerned, there were issues on around the 16th and 17th August. I think there are still issues now, but that's all I was saying.

It appears my problem is the time I'm attempting to play/update, I finish work at 3am. My gaming hours fall between 3am and 6am. Steam refuses to connect 95% of the time, I have to try upwards to 50+ times before it'll login, thus any scheduled updates of steam has not worked once since I moved to Slingshot.

I had a day off today and connected instantly and smoothly throughout the day. Steam began updating several games and happily chewed away 12gb of my monthly allowance. Updates coming from Slingshots own servers.

So basically I have a service which I can't online game any more, you cannot connect to Steam during the middle of the night to collect updates, the browsing experience for the girlfriend in the evening is bordering on moronic and a monthly cap is being devoured by content stored locally on Slingshot servers.

Stupidly, I had envisaged a utopia where my Steam and Battle.net would update gently through the night and I would be able to have a game when I felt like it and my girlfriend would be able to goof around on websites while I'm at work. It appears my list of demands falls well outside Slingshots capabilities.

I'm going to endure another painful downtime and move back to Telecom, good luck to you all.

the problem is that time period , you are trying to play games where every person has set there torrents to run so i would think that time is a free for all and nothing is prioritized .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Interesting, I have no problem with my steam and playing during the free period hours. I am able to play modern warfare 2 without any lag and in the medal of honour beta I was able to play people in america without a hitch.
My ping is around 40-50ms and my download speed is around 6-7mbits/s with an upload of around 1mbit. This is FS/FS for me

Because there are costs involved, like the TB they had to dl to get a copy of the server here, the cost of the machines to run the steam server... You can access it for free during the free periods and it should not be slowed during those periods. There was a great speed improvement to steam when Slingshot stated using it's own server, so it's not asking too much to pay normally fees for this improvement.

Also I recall Slingshot saying not everything on steam is on the Slingshot server and that could be why sometimes you experience Slow speeds, but most of the time you should be able to access it at FS (unless you have a 256/128 plan or are capped).

If you getting slow speeds to Slingshot steam server the Check your DNS settings to make sure your using Slingshot DNS
and Just to make sure if you run windows flush your DNS Cache: Start --> Run --> Type "CMD" --> Type "ipconfig /flushdns"

Back on Telecom.

- Pings have returned to 25 to 40 from the horrid 450 spiking mess I saw on Slingshot.
- Steam always connects and at any time.
- Downloads have returned to 1.7mB/s from the dribbly 20kb/s on Slingshot.
- The girlfriend can browse again.

Slingshot are refusing to release me from the $150 fee and refusing to refund any of the first payment I made, I guess they are trying to extract every last penny out of me for the 1 week I was with them.

Beware, gamers - this is not the ISP you are looking for.
